HELMSBURG — An Indianapolis man is suspected of driving drunk and crashing on the State Road 135 North bridge detour.

The crash happened on Railroad Road near Stinson Road at about 11:20 a.m. May 22. Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Eggebrecht said Jeffrey M. Long, 39, was still in the driver’s seat when he arrived; he was complaining of leg and neck pain.

Deputy Chad Williams reported smelling alcohol on Long’s breath and seeing an open alcohol container in the passenger seat.

Eggebrecht reported seeing tire marks from the north on Railroad Road. They veered to the left and led to where the vehicle came to rest near a utility pole, breaking it.

Long was taken to a hospital by ambulance. He refused to comply with a chemical test before he was transported; Williams applied for a search warrant for his blood.

Long’s 2015 Hyundai Sonata was towed. At press time, Long had not been charged with a crime.
