State track meet, retiring teachers, music festivals and more: 5 Things You Need to Know This Week

1. School is out for the summer — and it’s before Memorial Day, for the second year in a row. If you don’t have your child’s or grandchild’s social schedule planned yet, check the Community Calendar for ideas. The school district’s free summer lunch program for children also starts this week at three locations. No snow days were used, so this will be one of the longest summer breaks in recent years, at 10 weeks and four days long. (Last year, summer vacation lasted 11 weeks and one day.) School starts again Wednesday, Aug. 9.

2. A second accident with injuries has occurred on Railroad Road, the detour for the closed bridge on State Road 135 North in Bean Blossom. Read the report in the police blotter this week. A third one occurred over the weekend. Since the detour went into effect April 3, four property-damage crashes have occurred on that road in addition to these three. The whole road is now a no-passing zone with a 30 mph speed limit, and deputies have stepped up patrols. The bridge isn’t expected to be finished and reopened until the beginning of August.

3. Five Eagles athletes have earned bids to the state track and field finals in Bloomington Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3: senior Madison Fields in pole vault; junior Wyatt Wyman in the 800m run; and the 4x800m relay team of Wyman, senior Job Lawson, sophomore Jackson McPheeters and junior Isaiah Keefauver. Check out the results online.

4. Three beloved teachers won’t be returning to Brown County classrooms next fall. Jeff Lepore, Donna Duff and Sarah Burke have retired. The Democrat caught up with them during the last few days of classes to ask about their favorite memories and gather their advice for new teachers. See photos from their retirement party and read their reflections by clicking on their names above.

5. Music festival season starts this week in Bean Blossom with the John Hartford Memorial Festival May 31 to June 3. The 51st annual Bill Monroe Memorial Bluegrass Festival follows June 10 to 17, both at Monroe’s music park. The Muddy Roots Weekender is also going on June 2 and 3 at eXplore Brown County.
