Man charged with two child abuse felonies

A Bloomington man has been charged with two felonies after police and the Department of Child Services said he abused a 5-year-old.

The investigation began in December when DCS received a call on the tip line reporting abuse. A DCS agent interviewed the child the same day.

The child said he was struck by John R. Becker, 43, according to a probable cause affidavit filed last week.

The child’s mother told the DCS agent that the child ran into something, causing a bruise. It extended from the child’s right eye back about three inches and was one inch wide, the report said.

The Riley Hospital Protection Team stated that the injury was more consistent with the child being struck instead of running into something, the report said.

The mother also told the investigator that the 5-year-old babysits his 1-year-old sibling, the report said.

The children were removed from the RV and campground they were living in on Dec. 29. They were placed into temporary foster care.

The children were later returned to their mother, but Becker had to move out, the report said.

He was charged May 26 with domestic battery on a person less than 14 years old and battery on a person less than 14 years old, both Level 6 felonies.
