Local winery wins medals, trophy at international contest

WEST LAFAYETTE — Brown County Winery took home several awards from the 2017 INDY International Wine Competition at Purdue University, including one of the top trophies.

Brown County Winery’s 2016 Strawberry Wine was named Fruit Wine of the Year at the contest, which included nearly 2,000 wines from 37 states and 14 countries.

Wines were blindly evaluated for their unique qualities of aroma and taste by 50 professional judges representing the general wine-drinking public, from millennials to baby boomers.

Eleven other Brown County Winery entries also won medals at this competition:

  • 2016 Plum Wine — Bronze

The strawberry wine that was named Fruit Wine of the Year also won a Best in Class award and a Double Gold award.

This batch brings the total number of awards Brown County Winery has taken home from the INDY International Wine Competition to 47 medals, two Best of Class awards and three trophies since 1999.

Since its founding in 1986, the winery has won more than 160 medals in various competitions.

Its main building is on State Road 46 West in Gnaw Bone and its tasting room is on Old School Way in downtown Nashville.

Tea rooms recognized for ‘charming’ statewide appeal

Two local tea rooms made the list of “8 Charming Tea Rooms in Indiana.”

Sweetea’s Tea Shop in Nashville and The Farmhouse Cafe and Tea Room outside Bean Blossom were both chosen for the list, posted at onlyinyourstate.com. It’s titled “Visit These 8 Charming Tea Rooms in Indiana For a Piece of the Past.”
