Wood, watercolor featured at Hoosier Artist Gallery
Works by Joe Pictor, a painter, and Tom Lowe, a woodworker, are featured at the Hoosier Artist Gallery during July.
Pictor, a self-taught watercolor artist, depicts peaceful scenes from his travels through Maine, Minnesota and his home state, Indiana.
Lowe uses a scroll saw to create silhouettes, animal puzzles, rendered scenes and spiritual subjects in wood.

Two award-winning painters, Patricia Rhoden Bartels and Kathy Blankenheim, will teach “secrets of painting like an Indiana master” over three days in July.
Participants will learn basic design, color theory and painting techniques, with an emphasis on the history of impressionism in Indiana art. The workshop is suitable for beginner and experienced painters of any age.
It will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 to Friday, July 14 at the Brown County Art Gallery on Artist Drive. The cost is $300.

Brown County pottery on exhibit at gallery
An exhibit of early Brown County pottery and paintings from the Richmond Art Museum is open at the Brown County Art Gallery.
The exhibit features work from three early Brown County potteries: Brown County Pottery, Brown County Hills Pottery, Karl Martz and Becky Brown. More than 100 pieces of pottery are on display, loaned from private collections, and about 70 pieces are for sale.
Brown County Pottery opened in the 1930s. Many local people worked at the business, which grew into one of the largest in the country during its 20 years of operation. One young apprentice was Karl Martz. He and wife, Becky Brown, would eventually open their own pottery business in Nashville. Martz went on to start the ceramics department at Indiana University. Another employee, Claude Graham, worked with Brown County Pottery until it closed in the early ’50s. He partnered with Carolyn Ondreicka to open Brown County Hills Pottery, which operated during the ’60s.
A collection of paintings, on loan from the Richmond Art Museum, also will be on display. The RAM, east of Indianapolis by the Ohio border, is currently closed for renovations.
The free exhibit runs through Sunday, July 30. Monday through Saturday, the gallery at 1 Artist Drive is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Make jewelry at state park nature center
Artist-in-residence Amy Greely will lead a jewelry-making workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center.
Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshops include a 10 a.m. hike to explore the understory of the forest floor to provide inspiration.
Weave-in, spin-in planned monthly at library
Weavers and spinners of all skill levels can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, July 15 and Aug. 19.
Weaving and spinning experts and beginners are welcome to ask questions and to share projects and ideas at the free events for teens and adults. No registration is needed.

Artist to demonstrate oil techniques at state beaches
Nashville oil painter Charlene Marsh will demonstrate her plein air, palette knife painting techniques at two state recreation areas this summer for Arts in the Parks projects.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, Marsh will paint and take questions from the public at Starve Hollow State Recreation Area swimming beach, 4345 South County Road 275 West in Vallonia.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, Marsh will demonstrate techniques at the Monroe Lake Paynetown State Recreation Area swimming beach, 485 State Road 446 South in Bloomington. Both events go on rain or shine.

Watercolor artists featured at art guild
J.A. Burst of Columbus and Linda Gredy of Dayton, Ohio, are the featured artists at the Brown County Art Guild during July.
Gredy will give a demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at the guild.
Siblings give classical concert at church
BEAN BLOSSOM — A concert of piano, organ and flute music will be performed by Joshua Wallace Ridenour and Fiona Ivy Ridenour at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, at state roads 45 and 135 North.
Grandchildren of Sandy and Joe Ridenour of Brown County, the teenage siblings will play compositions by Bach, Telemann, Rachmaninoff and Faure.
Currently a student of Marco Petricic of the University of Indianapolis, Joshua has studied piano and organ for 12 years. He will be a freshman at Texas Christian University this fall.
Fiona, a student of Rebecca Arrensen, flutist in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, has studied piano for 10 years. She will be a junior at Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis.
The concert, part of the Bean Blossom Music Series, is free and open to the public.

Nominations sought for state poet laureate
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Arts Commission is accepting nominations for Indiana State Poet Laureate.
The poet laureate’s purpose is advance the knowledge, appreciation and art of poetry throughout Indiana.
Nominees must be current residents of Indiana and remain residents during their two-year term of service. They should be published poets and have experience in educational program development.
Nominations should be limited to a single-page letter and a resume. No additional materials should be included. They will be reviewed by a committee of representatives from state major institutions of higher education this fall.
Nominations must be submitted by email only to Stephanie Haines with the IAC at [email protected] before 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1.

The town of Nashville will again host a free public concert series at the Village Pavilion at Main and Jefferson streets through October. Bring a lawn chair.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.
Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
