Crowning achievement: Brown County Fair Queen Pageant

This year’s Brown County Fair queen pageant was two contests in one, with a fair princess being chosen from the under-16 competitors and the queen chosen from the 18-and-older competitors. The Brown County Fair queen will advance to the state fair queen pageant in January.

QUEEN CANDIDATES

Jennifer Bube

Age: 18

Parents: Mike and Sharon Bube

School and work: Home school graduate; Ivy Tech Community College and Sonoran Desert Institute student; completed associate degree in 2017. Majored in visual communications and in advanced gunsmithing. Currently serving as a Lilly Endowment intern for the Brown County Community Foundation.

Activities and honors: Brown County Parks and Recreation assistant soccer coach; founder and president of The Beverage Club; CCA National Speech and Debate Club award-winning alumna and current guest judge; Indiana Right to Life participant; St. Agnes Catholic Church member, volunteer and substitute Sunday school teacher; Jackson Township Fire Department event volunteer; supplemental instructor for Ivy Tech; member and public relations chair of Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society chapter; author of works in literary magazine; 4-H tenure member, Junior Leaders officer and camp junior director; dean’s list recipient; Rotary Youth Leadership Award winner; former Childrens Conferences International group leader; volunteer at Brown County Health & Living Community; OULA dance fitness instructor. “I enjoy good coffee, good company and good puns.”

Goals: Will start an 8-month program in September to achieve advanced gunsmithing certification. Her plan is to open a business in Brown County focusing on firearms use and safety, eventually offering hands-on self defense training.

Favorite quote: “Never a day without a line.” — St. Philip Neri. “As an artist … I can take this to literally mean the desire to never end a day without painting a line. Or, as an altruist, I more often find myself using it to incite myself to never let a day close without being or doing something good.”

Kendra Satter

Age: 18

Parents: Jamie and Michelle Satter

School and work: Graduate of Indian Creek High School. Plans to attend IUPUC to major in pre-hygiene (dental) and business.

Activities and honors: Member of Mt. Zion Separate Baptist Church, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County, the National Technical Honor Society and the dental division of Skills USA; award-winner in the Health Occupation Students of America; Heritage Brothers Scholarship recipient. Also enjoys playing softball, makeup and “anything else involving beauty.”

Goals: To become a dental hygienist “so I can brighten the world one smile at a time.”

Hannah Huber

Age: 17

Parents: Crissie and Jeff Oaldon

School and work: Senior at Brown County High School.

Activities and honors: Member of Big Brothers Big Sisters; nine-year 4-H member currently participating in the horse and pony, boer goat, swine, sheep and Junior Leaders clubs; and president of the Brown County 4-H Animal Club, horse and pony and Junior Leaders clubs. Also enjoys camping, horseback riding, hiking and “working to save money for my future.”

Goals: To attend Indiana University to major in agricultural law or criminal law.

Favorite quote: “We don’t grow when things are easy. We grow when we face challenges.” — Unknown. “I live by this quote, as I face daily obstacles in life as a juggle my schedule with work, family and friends.”

PRINCESS CANDIDATES

Hailey Lane

Age: 16

Parents: Jason and Christy Lane

School and work: Junior at Brown County High School.

Activities and honors: Participant in Girl Scouts, 4-H, church youth group, softball, Rhapsody Show Choir; received the Eagle Pride award for softball last school year. Also enjoys spending time with her pigs, attending church, dancing, doing nails and working with other people’s hair and makeup.

Goals: “To go to college, have a good job and have a house of my own. I plan to settle down one day, get married and own dogs and cats and have children.”

Favorite quote: “Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” — Babe Ruth. “Whether I win or lose, succeed or fail, I won’t be afraid to do my best at everything I do.”

Emma Snyder

Age: 17

Parents: Kevin and Marlene Snyder

School and work: Junior at Brown County High School.

Activities and honors: Co-founder of Kids on Wheels, which is working to build a skate park and recreation area for local teens and the community; volunteer with Mother’s Cupboard and the Glass Slipper Event; member of student council, Interact Club and 4-H (Junior Leaders Club and camp counselor). Also enjoys drawing and art, training animals, kayaking, camping and skateboarding.

Goals: To obtain a certified nursing assistant license and go to nursing school. Would like to attend the University of Southern Indiana.

Jessica Taylor

Age: 17

Grandparents: Debbie and Gary Havely

School and work: Senior at Brown County High School.

Activities and honors: Member of 4-H, Junior Leaders Club, St. Agnes Catholic Church Youth Group, Big Brothers Big Sisters, thespians, varsity girls golf team and prom committee; volunteer for Nazareth Farm service project and vacation Bible school; golf spirit award recipient; performed in the play “Annie”; placed flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. Also enjoys photography, fishing, and reading and writing poetry.

Goals: To attend Indiana University or Ball State, to major in broadcasting and journalism and become a news reporter.
