Blues competition taking place at dance barn
The South Central Indiana Blues Society’s second annual Blues Challenge will start at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20 at Mike’s Dance Barn, 2277 State Road 46 West.
At stake are cash prizes and the opportunity to represent the SCI Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, in January 2018. The society also will appoint representatives to compete in the youth musical group and best self-produced CD categories.
The event is free for SCIBS members; a $7 cover charge is charged for nonmembers. Memberships are available at the door.
The challenge is part of an August celebration of Indiana Blues Month.

B3 Gallery will feature works by several local photographers, members of the Brown County Photography Club.
The show will run Aug. 8 through Sept. 5, with an artists’ reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 during the monthly Art Walk.
Local and worldwide images by club members are included, and information about the photography club will be available.

Art Walk, featured artists at art guild
During the Second Saturday Village Art Walk on Aug. 12, the Brown County Art Guild will present an evening with Curtis Cantwell Jackson and Janiece Jaffe from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Lynn Dunbar of Louisville, Kentucky, and Joel Knapp of Gallatin, Tennessee, are August’s featured artists at the guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

Weave-in, spin-in planned monthly at library
Weavers and spinners of all skill levels can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 19.
Weaving and spinning experts and beginners are welcome to ask questions and to share projects and ideas at the free event for teens and adults. No registration is needed.

Photography, mosaics featured at gallery in August
In August, Hoosier Artist Gallery is featuring work by photographer Kendall Reeves and mosaics by Sally Kinsey.
Reeves focuses on Americana and things that have seen better days. He visits ghost towns and ventures through abandoned buildings to find his subjects.
Kinsey produces both fine and functional mosaic art.

Blues fest returns to music park in August
BEAN BLOSSOM — The Bean Blossom Blues Fest, otherwise known as the BEAN, will start Thursday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 11 p.m. and continue Aug. 25 and 26.
At the festival at Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground, fans can meet and talk to artists and performers, sit in on jam sessions, learn how to play the harmonica and sit around campfires with new and old friends.
A free shuttle is offered to host hotels so those not camping can enjoy music and beer without driving.
Music continues Friday, Aug. 25, from 2 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Create a collage with mixed media
Dixie Ferrer will lead a mixed media collage workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 S. Van Buren St.

Nominations sought for state poet laureate
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Arts Commission is accepting nominations for Indiana State Poet Laureate.
The poet laureate’s purpose is advance the knowledge, appreciation and art of poetry throughout Indiana. Nominees must be current residents of Indiana and remain residents during their two-year term of service. They should be published poets and have experience in educational program development.
Nominations should be limited to a single-page letter and a resume. No additional materials should be included. They will be reviewed by a committee of representatives from state major institutions of higher education this fall.
Nominations must be submitted by email only to Stephanie Haines with the IAC at [email protected] before 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1.
Brown County Baskets on display at gallery
A collection about Brown County’s artistic history features baskets, early photographs and artifacts at the Brown County Art Gallery.
The exhibit, “Art With a Purpose: Brown County Baskets” is open daily through Sept. 4. There is no charge to visit the gallery at 1 Artist Drive.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.
Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
