Coach’s comments: The Eagles came up just a little short of winning a three-way match at Cascades Golf Course, losing to Brownstown Central on a fifth score tiebreaker but defeating the host Edgewood Mustangs. The Eagles and Braves both shot a 202, but the Braves had the next best score to claim victory. For the third consecutive match, the Eagles’ Ashley Masteller garnered medalist honors, shooting a 44. Senior Lauren Burker recorded her first sub-50 round with a 49, and fellow senior Meghan Cassiday had her best score of the year with a 51. Brown County was to host Eastern Greene Aug. 10, and will then be idle until Thursday, Aug. 17 when they play Indian Creek at Tameka Woods.

BOYS TENNIS

Coach’s comments: The Eagles are coming off a second-place finish in the Western Indiana Conference and were the sectional runner-up. The Eagles graduated four of the nine players they had last year. It would seem that the Eagles are in rebuilding mode, but all five returners earned a varsity letter last year. Of the 12 players on this year’s squad, seven are new to high school tennis. Even with our youth I expect the Eagles to use their work ethic and adopt the attitude of “What can I do to make our team a better team today?” Seniors Abraham Oliver and Elijah Roush will be counted on for their leadership, and that has shown with their dedication to playing a lot of tennis this summer. Juniors Chase Watson and Nathaniel Fox have made great strides in their individual games and will be counted on to improve the varsity lineup. Sophomore Aaron McCann has gotten a lot stronger by lifting all summer and his game has improved dramatically. As for the newcomers, sophomore Ethan Maggard is new to the game of tennis, but he is an athlete and is willing to listen and work hard to improve. Freshmen Aiden Burt, Nolan Patterson, Spencer Blee, Noah Cochran, John Oliver and Reid Davis all look to fill varsity spots for the Eagles. I expect for us to be like the Eagles teams in the past: hardworking, positive attitudes, showing outstanding sportsmanship, excelling in the classroom and being ambassadors for the game of tennis.
