Local distillery in state spotlight; Maple Leaf location questions surface

BRIGHT SPOT

Local distillery in state spotlight

Bear Wallow Distillery, based in Gnaw Bone, has been chosen to make the 2017 Indiana State Fair cocktail.

The Lemonade Moonshine Shake-up is being sold in the Grand Hall — Indiana Beer Wine And Spirits Building on Main Street, and the Free Stage Bar. It’s made using Bear Wallow Distillery’s Hoosier Hooch Lemonade Moonshine.

Business owner Susan Spagnuolo said a representative of the state fair concession company visited the distillery in May and asked if they’d be willing to share their cocktail recipe. “It has been a big seller at the fair,” she said.

The cocktail also will be featured on the Travel Channel’s show “Food Paradise” as part of an episode on food at the Indiana State Fair.

The state fair, which takes place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, is open daily through Sunday, Aug. 20.

TAKE NOTE

Maple Leaf location questions surface

Land intended for the Maple Leaf Performing Arts Center is going before the Brown County Area Plan Commission for rezoning next week.

Three letters to the editor in this week’s paper bring up concerns about whether or not this piece of land is right for this project. One of them was written by a member of the APC, the board that will hear the rezoning request Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Project organizers plan to build a 2,000-seat auditorium and parking area for 560 vehicles on 13.74 acres behind Brown County Health & Living Community. The land has been used for farm operations by Snyder Farm.

An architect drawing received in the Brown County Democrat office last week shows a new road, Maple Leaf Boulevard, running from State Road 46 along the edge of the farm, behind Salt Creek Inn, Dr. Pickel and Dr. Junken’s offices, the shopping plaza which contains Family Dollar, and Brown County Health & Living Community. Maple Leaf Boulevard would connect with the performing arts center’s parking lot behind the nursing home. The drawing also shows the parking lot connecting to Hawthorne Drive where it dead-ends now, where the Nashville police station sits. It also shows a possible new police station between where the station is now and the nursing home.

That site plan is posted at bcdemocrat.com.

Seniors who live in the Hawthorne Hills and Willow Manor apartment buildings near this proposed development plan to meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 at Willow Manor to discuss this project with a Maple Leaf leader.
