BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Aug. 16

Coach’s comments: The Eagles ran a great meet on a hot and humid Wednesday night. The event is made of two runners racing the 5,000-meter course at Eagle Park. Each pair runs 2,500 meters of the course. It took three pairs to score as a team. Both boys and girls BCXC teams had the winning pairs for each race. The boys team (Marino Dolph and Wyatt Wyman) started off the meet with a convincing win over the other pairs with a time of 15:48. The race was close at the halfway mark but Wyatt was able to pull away to secure the win.

On the girls side, the pair of Maris Wyman and Anna Fleetwood had a tough time for three quarters of the race before Anna was able to put the race away in the final kilometer. Overall, I thought both teams ran very well and are starting to figure out how to race.

GIRLS GOLF

Aug. 10

Coach’s comments: When the Brown County girls golf team was notified its match with Eastern Greene was canceled due to Eastern’s inability to field a team, the coaches decided to arrange an intrasquad match to make up for the lost day of competition. In a highly competitive match, the gold team, consisting of Lauren Burker, Meghan Cassiday, Allison Stogsdill and Taylor Poling, recorded a score of 210 to narrowly defeat the blue team of Ashley Masteller, Jessica Taylor, Kacee Kleindorfer, Aubrey Hollander and Courtney Hill, which shot a 213. Junior Ashley Masteller was the medalist, firing a two-over 38, while Meghan Cassiday led the blue team with a 47, sharing runner-up medalist honors with fellow senior Jessica Taylor. Coaches were extremely pleased with the performance, noting that it was the first time four players scored under 50, giving the Eagles an overall team score of 181, 21 strokes better than their previous best. Other scores: Lauren Burker 49, Taylor Poling 54, Allison Stogsdill 60, Aubrey Hollander 63, Kacee Kleindorfer 65, and Courtney Hill 69.

No. 1 doubles: Dustin Hamblen/Mitchell Walls (IC) d. Reid Davis/Ethan Maggard (BC) 8-3

Coach’s comments: The Eagles lost a tough opener to WIC East foe and host, the Braves. The young Eagles showed a desire to win, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Chase was very dominate in his win and Aiden picked up his first varsity win. Elijah had a little trouble getting started and once he got going it was just a little too late. Our doubles teams had two very close matches. It’s a different outcome if a few points go our way.

No. 3 doubles: Gus Reed/Ben Keller (M) d. Ethan Maggard/Reid Davis (BC) 4-0

Coach’s comments: On the second consecutive night, the Eagles fell to more experienced team, the Martinsville Artesians. Our singles had the opportunity to play a very good singles lineup, led by one of the best players in the state in Hunter Sylvester. Chase really played a very good mach, but was just beaten by a superior player. Aiden and Elijah played better in their losses, too. The Eagles changed up their doubles teams and Abe and Aaron were struggling to find their groove, just a lot of missed opportunities that will become fewer as they continue to play together. I was really impressed with the play of Nolan and Nathaniel at No. 2 doubles. They played really well and need to learn to play with a lead, which will come with experience. Our JV didn’t really get to play a lot of games, but made the most of their chances and gained much needed match experience.

We made some changes in the lineup again tonight to help save arms and shoulders. Even in defeat, the players were still positive and continue to improve in their games.
