Brown County started and finished strong in its football season-opener Aug. 18 against the Edinburgh Lancers, ending with a final score of 46-14 and many notable plays. But one of those 46 points truly set the game apart.

Kicker Skylar Fleischman became the first female player in Brown County High School history to score points in a varsity football game.

Fleischman, a junior, kicked a successful extra point after the Eagles’ first touchdown, a 50-yard run from quarterback Noah Carter to receiver Tristan Richards. After the TD, Fleischman stepped onto the field to kick her first varsity point with 7 minutes left in the first quarter.

After Fleishman’s kick, Richards, in at defensive back, intercepted the pass. In the following play, Carter’s hand-off to Colten Harper led to another touchdown run and gave Brown County’s kicker another successful crack at the ball.

In the second half, the Eagles’ defensive line worked hard to keep the Lancers from their goal. Defensive backs Bryce Denton and Griffin Kelly and linemen Layton Mosier and Matthew Duncan, all had tackles that held the Lancers back early in the third quarter, including a sack by Kelly.

With the ball back in his possession, Carter threw a pass to tight end Ezra Scully for another touchdown. Again, Fleischman successfully hit the extra point.

Overall, Fleischman contributed four extra points.

Head Coach Randy Minniear said Fleischman’s teammates have been welcoming to their only female teammate.

“They love her. She is part of the team. She is in every day and works hard. She plays soccer, also, so she comes over after soccer practice to our place and kicks field goals. She really works hard. I am very proud of her,” he said.

Minniear is looking forward to seeing what they can do with the rest of the season.

“This team seems to have the ability to work harder and harder. They are very close-knit, they’re very much together, and they won’t rest on the laurels of this win. I have a wonderful coaching staff, and I am very proud to be part of the blue and gold.”
