BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Aug. 22

Coach’s comments: It was a long night for the Eagles over at Shelbyville. The teams had to wait out two lightning delays before they had the opportunity to run on the Shelbyville semi-state course. With only 15 minutes of warm-up, the eagles took advantage of the famed course. Since we were unsure about getting two races in, the coaches decided to run one combined race.

Leading the Eagles on the boys side were Wyatt Wyman and Marino Dolph. It was fun to see the Eagles go 1-2 in the three-way meet with Shelbyville and Greensburg. Jackson McPheeters, Timmy Kilburn and Jordan Dolph finished off the scoring with places 5, 10 and 11, respectively. Jordan and Marino both made a critical pass in the last 400 meters of the race to secure the win. This was a nice win for the boys team.

Anna Fleetwood and Emilia Koester were the top two runners in the meet for the Eagles, both placing in the top five overall. Last year at this time the Eagles did not even have a team score. The Eagles ran well for having to warm up a couple of times before getting a chance to compete. Look for runners to drop time as we have the opportunity to run in a few more races.

Coach’s comments: Heading into the WIC Girls’ Golf Championships, the Brown County Lady Eagles had secured a top three seed. The team lived up to its expectations with a solid third-place finish behind conference champion Greencastle and runner-up Indian Creek. The Braves’ Lauren Parsley captured medalist honors with a well-played 78. The Eagles established a new school record at 382, which was nearly 40 strokes better than their season average. Junior Ashley Masteller’s 83 was good for third overall and enabled her to achieve all-conference honors for the third consecutive year. Joining Masteller on the all-conference team was senior Meghan Cassiday who shot a personal best of 97. Coach VanNess and I were extremely proud of the girls and their performance. All but one had never seen the course before. We feel as if we are heading in a positive direction as we prepare for the second half of the season. The Eagles travel to Hidden Hills Golf Course for a match with Eastern Greene Wednesday, Aug. 30.

No. 2 singles: Andrew Long (IC) d. Noah Cochran (BC) 8-1

No. 1 doubles: Dustin Hamblen/Mitchell Walls (IC) d. Reid Davis/Ethan Maggard (BC) 8-3

Coach’s comments: The Eagles lost a tough opener to WIC East foe and host, the Braves. The young Eagles showed a desire to win, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Chase was very dominate in his win and Aiden picked up his first varsity win. Elijah had a little trouble getting started and once he got going it was just a little too late. Our doubles teams had two very close matches. It’s a different outcome if a few points go our way.

No. 2 doubles: Gus Reed/Ben Keller (M) d. Ethan Maggard/John Oliver (BC) 6-0

No. 3 doubles: Gus Reed/Ben Keller (M) d. Ethan Maggard/Reid Davis (BC) 4-0

Coach’s comments: On the second consecutive night, the Eagles fell to more experienced team, the Martinsville Artesians. Our singles had the opportunity to play a very good singles lineup, led by one of the best players in the state in Hunter Sylvester. Chase really played a very good mach, but was just beaten by a superior player. Aiden and Elijah played better in their losses, too. The Eagles changed up their doubles teams and Abe and Aaron were struggling to find their groove, just a lot of missed opportunities that will become fewer as they continue to play together. I was really impressed with the play of Nolan and Nathaniel at No. 2 doubles. They played really well and need to learn to play with a lead, which will come with experience. Our JV didn’t really get to play a lot of games, but made the most of their chances and gained much needed match experience.

It seems like this lineup is fairly solid, but a lot of tennis to be played.

Coach’s comments: This was long day for the Eagles and wrapped up a grueling first two weeks of the season. The young Eagles have made some really good strides and continue to improve over the last two weeks. I saw some really good play from all the players, and with just two matches next week, the Eagles will get some much needed rest. In our two wins today, I was really impressed with Chase in how he handled the pressure of having to come back after losing his first set. Aaron seemed to settle into a good rhythm in his second match. Our freshmen continue to get valuable match experience as do our junior varsity players. The players all have kept a positive attitude and continue to be leaders in sportsmanship.

Brown Co.: 1-7, 0-1 WIC East
