Rotary Club

Jon Kay, an Indiana University professor and director of Traditional Arts Indiana in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, will speak at the Brown County Rotary Club breakfast meeting at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.

Kay’s research interests include public folklore, Indiana folklife and the interaction between folk arts and aging. He has an extensive list of publications, many focused on Indiana and some zeroing in on Brown County. His recent book, “Folk Art and Aging: Life-Story Objects and Their Makers,” is the basis of his presentation, which will address research on how the folk arts improve the quality of life for older adults.

Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary are welcome at the meeting in Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

Literary club

The Nashville Literary Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 to discuss Gabriel Marquez‘s book “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” translated by Gregory Rabassa.

Hosted by Carol Routh and Pam Flowers, Carolyn Emmert will lead discussion at Routh’s home.

To carpool, meet at the Brown County IGA parking lot in town or St. David’s Church in Bean Blossom.

Weight loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meeting is Sept. 21. Meetings are at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Rock, mineral club

Brown County Rock & Mineral Club members will host a rock and mineral show/swap from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. It will be at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.
