Girls golf team ready for postseason

Going into sectionals this week, the Brown County High School girls golf team was on the upswing.

The Eagles picked up a conference win against Owen Valley on Sept. 7. It was the Eagles’ first home match in over a month, and they won by 28 strokes.

But the team hasn’t had a lot of playing time since then.

The Sept. 12 match against Trinity Lutheran was canceled due to the opposing team only having one golfer on their roster.

In the Sept. 13 match, Brown County finished second behind Edinburgh and in front of Southwestern.

Against the Patriots, junior Ashley Masteller led the Eagles with a score of 45, earning medalist honors. Six of the remaining seven Eagles posted scores between 53 and 55 to help secure the win.

Masteller and senior Megan Cassiday have played well enough to earn All-Conference spots this year.

Cassiday said her four years of experience with the Brown County golf team has been positive.

“It has meant a lot to me,” she said. “We are a very social group, and it is a lot of fun getting to meet new players.”

As the golf team nears their shot at sectionals, her attitude is hopeful.

“We have a really good team, and we improve every time we play,” Cassiday said.

Coach Brad Baughman is looking forward to seeing whether the team can make a deep posteseason run against some strong competitors.

“Although it was nice to see our scores more tightly bunched, I think some of our players are capable of knocking off some strokes,” he said about the win over Owen Valley.

The Eagles also are strong golfers, and they do stand a chance in sectionals, but they will need to step up their game a bit in order to move forward, he said.

Sectionals were scheduled to start Monday morning, Sept. 18 on the Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington.
