GIRLS GOLF

Sept. 13

Edinburgh 187, Brown County 202, Southwestern 249

Brown Co.: Ashley Masteller 39 (medalist), Meghan Cassiday 53, Lauren Burker 55, Jessica Taylor 55, Aubrey Hollander 57, Kacee Kleindorfer 60.

Coach’s comments: In their final regular season competition, the BCHS Lady Eagles traveled to Deer Valley Golf Course and came away with a win and a loss. The Eagles shot a 202, good enough to beat the Southwestern Spartans but several strokes shy of the victorious Edinburgh Lancers. The Lancers put four players in the 40s to neutralize the Eagles’ Ashley Masteller’s medalist round of 39.

Sept. 18

Sectional

Martinsville 324, Bloomington South 364, Indian Creek 388, Bloomington North 390, Edinburgh 401, Brown County 412, Edgewood 425, Owen Valley 450

Brown Co.: Ashley Masteller 95, Allison Stogsdill 101, Meghan Cassiday 107, Lauren Burker 109, Jessica Taylor 109.

Coach’s comments: The BCHS Lady Eagles shot a 412 Monday in the IHSAA sectional at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington, a score that was right on the team’s season average. Unfortunately, that performance was only good for sixth place in the eight-team field. The Martinsville Artesians won the event with a 324, 40 strokes better than their nearest competitor, Bloomington South. Finishing third and advancing to the regional was Indian Creek. Ashley Masteller led the Eagles with a 95, but she needed a 92 or better to advance as an individual. Sophomore Allison Stogsdill, in her first season of golf, shot a 101 to notch the Eagles’ second-best score. It seems that our expectations always exceed our performance, but all in all, we had a solid season. We leveled off about halfway through and didn’t really improve down the stretch as we should have. We will certainly miss our four seniors, Lauren Burker, Meghan Cassiday, Kacee Kleindorfer and Jessica Taylor. We return some potential, but we will only be better if those returning players are willing to commit to improving.

BOYS SOCCER

Sept. 18

Bedford North Lawrence 3, Brown County 2

Brown Co. (9-1-1, 3-0 WIC East): Landon Cambridge 1 goal, 1 assist; Logan Fittz 1 goal; Ben Rygiel 1 assist.

Coach’s comments: Unlucky night for the Brown County boys team, who fell 3-2 to Bedford North Lawrence. Despite dominating for much of the game, Brown County couldn’t find goals to match their good field play and BNL managed to score three with more limited opportunities. BNL scored from a free kick in the 14th minute. Brown County leveled on a corner kick in the 16th minute, scored by Landon Cambridge and assisted by Ben Rygiel. BNL scored another from a scramble in the box that didn’t get cleared to go in with Brown County down 1-2 at halftime. Five minutes into the second half, Logan Fittz scored from a counter-attack with an assist from Cambridge, who did well to get his head up and pick out Fittz in front of goal. BNL scored their third in the 55th minute of the match. Brown County pushed hard and created a number of chances, but couldn’t find the tying goal.

Sept. 20

Martinsville 2, Brown County 1

Brown Co. (9-2-1, 3-0 WIC East): Landon Cambridge 1 goal; Logan Fittz 1 assist; Chris Ratzburg 7 saves.

Coach’s comments: Martinsville hung on to win against a Brown County slide that grew into the game. Martinsville scored from a free kick in the eighth minute of the first half. Goalie Chris Ratzburg terrifically saved a penalty kick in the 42nd minute of the match to go in to the half one goal down. Martinsville scored again in the 48th minute. Brown County finally began to keep possession and the pressure finally paid in the 71st minute when Landon Cambridge scored from a pass to the top of the box from Logan Fittz. Brown County was unable to find a second goal.

Coach’s comments: Another senior night in the books. The Eagles were defeated by the Waldron Mohawks by a score of 2-3. I was pleased to see the seniors win on a night dedicated to them. It has been a great four years with these two, Abe Oliver and Elijah Roush. Their leadership will be missed. The Eagles changed their lineup to accommodate the seniors.

Brown Co.: 2-14, 8th WIC East

No. 2 doubles: Gabe Wilson/Brayden McManaway (E) d. Cesar Ruiz/Ethan Maggart (BC) 6-3, 6-2

Coach’s comments: The Eagles gave the seniors and juniors the night off and let some of the underclassmen enjoy a taste of the varsity lineup. This is valuable experience to have to have to play more than an eight-game pro set. I was really were happy to see Spencer play so well. Ethan and Cesar were so close in all their points, but came up just a little short.

No. 2 doubles: Nolan Patterson/Noah Coachran (BC) d. Tristen Seacat/Jacob Willoughby (CC) 6-1, 6-3

Coach’s comments: The Eagles completed their home part of the schedule with a pair of loses to Southwestern and Corydon Central. The Eagles had more that their opponent to deal with, as temperatures on the court reached above 90 degrees. I hope we saw a glimpse of the future with Noah and Nolan getting a pair of wins. Aaron came back from a first match defeat and won easily in his second match. The seniors had great match but couldn’t capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes. Spencer got another match and made some improvements. Next match is Tuesday against White River Valley at Edgewood, 5:30 p.m.
