The Brown County High School volleyball team pulled away from a slump in the first set to win a Sept. 14 match at Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium. Still, the Edinburgh Lancers proved to be solid opponents.

In the first set of the evening, the Lancers led 16-25, and they continued to keep the Eagles on their toes for the second set. However, the Eagles stepped up to the challenge, winning the second set 25-21.

Coach Julie Owens knew the Eagles would need to rally.

“Edinburgh is always a really well-coached, aggressive team, and I knew this would be a tough match, despite their record,” she said.

“Our players played like individuals with very little motivation the first set, and Edinburgh came out ready to play.”

Notwithstanding the Lancers’ fighting spirit, the Eagles turned things around in the final two sets. The home team won the third set 25-16 and continued to play with confidence in the fourth set, winning 25-10 to take the best-of-five match.

“I was proud of how our Eagles handled the adversity,” Owens said. “It was a big win for us, and big step in the right direction as we get closer to postseason.”

The Eagles (10-5) are set to play in the WIC finals Thursday, Oct. 5, followed by sectional tournament play, which begins Tuesday, Oct. 10.
