Man charged with sexting minor

A Brown County man has been charged with a felony after an Indiana State Police investigation showed he sent an inappropriate photo to a minor early this year, court documents say.

A man notified authorities after two of his teenage children reported receiving text messages asking for sexual acts in February from an unknown person. The person also sent a photo of his genitals, according to a probable cause affidavit by ISP Detective Stacy Brown.

The children were 17 and 19.

Brown was able to determine the messages were sent using a VOIP (voice over internet protocol) number belonging to Eric R. Sumpter, 29, of State Road 45.

This was a person the family knew, the father told police.

Police found Sumpter in June, working at a restaurant in Nashville.

Sumpter agreed to speak with Brown in a police vehicle outside, but once he opened the passenger door, he said he was having second thoughts about talking to police.

Brown noted that Sumpter never inquired about the allegations against him. Sumpter told police that it must be a “big deal” if the state police was handling the case and that he was not going to speak before talking to a lawyer, the affidavit said.

A warrant was issued Sept. 19 on a charge of dissemination of material harmful to minors, a Level 6 felony.

Sumpter was booked into the Brown County jail Sept. 20 and bonded out the same day.
