5 Things to Know: West Nile mosquitoes; $2 million loan; road work update and more

1. Two mosquitoes in Brown County have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Brown County Health Department reports. No humans have tested positive in this county. However, there is at least one case of West Nile in neighboring Bartholomew County, and at least 10 cases have been diagnosed throughout the state this year. State health officials advise people to wear mosquito repellent and reduce mosquito breeding grounds by clearing water-holding yard items, fixing failed septic systems and keeping grass short. Check a map of state West Nile data at gis.in.gov/apps/ISDH/Arbo.

2. County leaders are thinking about taking out another $2 million loan. This one would pay for a new radio communications system for emergency responders, repairing the grandstand at the fairgrounds and light poles at Deer Run Park, and possibly leaving some money for road work. The idea is to make it replace another loan taxpayers are already paying for, so taxes wouldn’t go up. Read more here: http://www.bcdemocrat.com/2017/09/28/government_briefs-23/.

3. Paving is close to finished on county roads. Last week, crews were making repairs to T.C. Steele and Crooked Creek roads and the final road surface is going down soon, said Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner. On the Yellowwood Road project, the target date to reopen the bridge over Salt Creek and the road is Tuesday, Oct. 17, said Indiana Department of Transportation spokesperson Harry Maginity. That could change with any weather delays.

4. A meeting about the Salt Creek Trail route has been set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Brown County High School. Possible alternatives for the phase that will go across Brown County Schools’ Eagle Park will be discussed. School board members, Superintendent Laura Hammack and neighbors Gary and Sheila Oliver have brought up concerns about student safety and maintenance of the trail if it’s placed along the back side of the park in the woods near the cross-country course. 5. If you’re thinking about signing up for the Brown County Hilly Half, do it this week. The cost goes up to $60 from $50 on Oct. 1 for the 13.1-mile race. For the 5K and 10K races, the price jump doesn’t happen until Oct. 31. Read more here: http://www.bcdemocrat.com/2017/09/28/hilly_half_returning_to_park-2/.
