To the editor:

Brown County Literacy Coalition (BCLC) sends a big thank-you to our tutors from 2016-17: Joan Amati, Fagan Baldwin, Gloria Berryman, Jonathan Bolte, Shari Frank, Karen Franklin, Elise Gahan, Bob Gustin, Samantha McDowell, Angela Mangum, Becky Minniear, Joe Miller, Julie Milloy, Jeff Mooney, Carol Russell, Nancy Schmutzler, Rita Simon, Caren Senesac, Katrina Vollmer, Bob Westbrook, Joan Wright and Kim Young. Thanks to all of you, 27 kids received patient, supportive one-to-one tutoring in reading. Every child showed improved self confidence and reading. Thank you!

Sprunica Principal Abbie Oliver says, “The tutors help provide a complete wrap-around blanket of support, with the family, school and community all working together for these kids.”

Christy Wrightsman, former Van Buren principal, and Kelli Bruner, Helmsburg principal, also tell us how great it is for these kids to have an extra mentor in their lives.

Thanks to Brown County school teachers, principals, administration, families, community and the Brown County Community Foundation’s ongoing support, we’re looking forward to another good year.

Would you like to tutor? We are looking for more tutors to help reach more kids.

Who are the tutors? They are grandparents, university students, retired teachers and community members just like you, who want to be a part of the solution. Dedicating an hour and a half, once or twice a week, we enjoy seeing kids develop both confidence and skill.

If you have a love of reading, and want to help, please contact BCLC at 812-988-6960 or email [email protected].

You are also invited to learn more at our next volunteer tutor meeting, Saturday, Oct. 14 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the Brown County Public Library, downstairs in meeting room A. We will be sharing refreshments, ideas, successes and challenges. Please join us.

Shari Frank, BCLC volunteer tutor and tutor coordinator
