‘Slightly haunted’ puppet shows starting
Melchior Marionette Theatre on South Van Buren Street downtown is performing a Halloween-themed show for a 35th season.
From Friday, Oct. 13 through Friday, Oct. 27, three shows will be done on the hour, from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays and Sundays.
Saturday shows, Oct. 14 and 21, will be hourly from 1 to 4 p.m., with a 7 p.m. show Oct. 14 only.
Tickets are $5 at the theater. For children under 2, admission is free. Free popcorn is included.

‘Haunting’ weekends in October at homestead
COLUMBUS — Shireman Homestead, 7060 W. County Road 200N, will host Haunting Fridays and Saturdays in October.
“Scare time” from 8 to 11 p.m., includes live actors and costs $12 per person, cash only.
“Kid-friendly time” from 4 to 6 p.m. provides non-scary activities and scenes for $5 per person.
Refreshments and souvenirs are also sold.
Proceeds help the nonprofit group bus its friendly animals to nursing homes, churches and other venues to educate, entertain and encourage others.

‘Falloween’ party planned at Deer Run Park
Brown County Parks & Recreation will host its annual “Falloween” party at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 at Deer Run Park.
It includes hay rides, a weenie roast, an outdoor movie at 8 p.m. and other activities. Bring a lawn chair for the movie, “Wonder Woman,” rated PG-13.

Friendly Forest open Fridays, Saturdays
HELMSBURG — The Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, will host its Friendly Forest behind the fire station starting Oct. 20.
The forest, with costumed characters handing out candy in the woods, will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 20 and 27, and Saturdays, Oct. 21 and 28.
Candy, popcorn and hot chocolate will be provided for $1 per costumed child; adults get in free with each paying child. Snacks, coffee and pumpkins also are sold.

Get tickets for haunted trail at Deer Run Park
Brown County Parks and Recreation will host a haunted trail and barn at Deer Run Park from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 20 to 28.
A booth at the upper concession stand will sell tickets for $7 per person for age 16 and older, or $5 per person for 15 and younger.
Some material will be inappropriate for young children. A responsible person age 16 or older must accompany children younger than 12.
Proceeds go to parks and rec to assist with improving programming and park upkeep.
Community harvest fest planned at church

State park hosts contests, friendly trail, scary trail Oct. 21
From 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, the Friendly Trick-or-Treat Trail, on the paved Friends Trail by the Brown County State Park Office, will be open for young children and parents with or without costumes.
From 8 to 10 p.m. the Friends Trail will become the scary Haunted Trail.
There is no cost besides standard park admission at the gate; but donations are welcome to support the Friends group, which completes projects for the park.
A pumpkin carving contest sign-up and information are available at the Park Office. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 21. Supply your own pumpkin or visit the camp store to buy a pumpkin.
Judging starts at dark Oct. 21 for a campsite decorating contest. Visit the campground booth for sign-up and information.

Trick-or-treat on Salt Creek Trail on Halloween
The annual Salt Creek Trick-or-Treat Trail will be open to costumed visitors of all ages from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The paved trail, which is three-quarters of a mile long, will be lined with trick-or-treat stations of all kinds, beginning at the Brown County YMCA Trailhead and ending at the Nashville CVS. The Brown County Access bus will provide free shuttle service from CVS back to the Y.
Volunteers are invited to create original themed and decorated stations along the trail and give out candy in costume. Candy and/or cash donations to support the cause are welcome before Friday, Oct. 27 at the YMCA.
The rain location for the trail is inside the YMCA.
The free event is sponsored by the Brown County YMCA and Brown County Parks & Recreation.
