Lucky stop: Nashville man wins lottery

A road trip to buy a car led to a Nashville man winning $100,000 on Powerball.

Kenneth Crabtree is a regular Powerball player, but it was a ticket he bought outside of his normal routine that turned into a big winner.

He had been in search of a specific used car, and he drove from Brown County to Crawfordsville with a friend to buy it. He drove into Bloomington to wash the car and gas it up.

He walked into Circle K, 2658 E. Third St., and handed the cashier a $50 bill, saying he wanted to fill up the car but wasn’t sure how much it would take. The car took $44 in gas, and when he went back in he decided to buy two more Powerball tickets with Power Play with his remaining $6.

In the Oct. 7 drawing, Crabtree’s Powerball ticket matched four of the five numbers and the Powerball, which is a $50,000 prize. Because he chose to add Power Play, it doubled his winnings to $100,000.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

He woke up Sunday morning after the drawing, planning to drive his new-to-him car to tell his friend about the Powerball win. But, the car wouldn’t start.

“It did its job to make me $100,000,” he joked.

Crabtree, an apartment superintendent, plans to pay off his pickup.

He said he will probably keep the new, lucky car because it now has sentimental value.
