Kids can run before Hilly Half for free

A race just for kids will take place in next week in conjunction with the Brown County YMCA’s Hilly Half Marathon.

On Thursday, Nov. 9, children of preschool age to sixth grade can run around the Brown County High School track at the football field.

Check-in will start at 5:45 p.m. at the McDonald’s tent at the track.

Ronald McDonald will help the runners warm up at about 6 p.m.; and races, divided into age groups, will begin shortly after.

Students are being asked to track their running before the race and turn it in by Monday, Nov. 6 to their school or the YMCA. Brown County Schools students have received a running log at school, or they can pick one up at the YMCA or their school. This is not required to participate, but it is suggested.

At the kids’ run on Nov. 9, preschoolers will run one lap on the track; first- and second-graders will run two laps; and third- through sixth-graders will run four laps.

All runners will get a race “bib” to pin to their clothes and a medal for finishing, said YMCA executive director Kim Robinson. They’ll also get post-race snacks from McDonald’s, and Ronald McDonald will be available for selfies afterward.

A bounce house will be set up at the track courtesy of Seward’s Party Rentals.

There is no charge to participate.

Runners can sign up in advance or at the event; look for fliers in backpacks.

The Hilly Half races, including a 5K, 10K and half-marathon, take place Saturday, Nov. 11 in Brown County State Park. See brief below for details.
