Teen drivers OK after crashes on Clay Lick

HAMBLEN TWP. — Three local teens escaped serious injuries in two separate accidents the morning of Oct. 23. Both occurred on Clay Lick Road.

Jaelynn B. Wilkey, 17, was driving a Ford Escort south on Clay Lick just before 8 a.m. Oct. 23 when the vehicle lost traction, according to a police report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Magner.

The car went sideways and left the road in the 3700 block, striking a tree on the front driver’s side, then struck a smaller pair of trees along the passenger front and side, the report said.

When Magner arrived, Wilkey and her 14-year-old passenger were standing outside the car, the report said. Both were checked by EMS for face pain; their mother refused further treatment for them, the report said.

At 9:42 a.m. Oct. 23, police and EMS were called again to a crash on Clay Lick Road, this time in the 2800 block near Long Lake Road.

Deputy Magner found an overturned Volkswagen sitting across a driveway. The driver, 19-year-old Joanna Rumsey, told him her wrist was hurt.

Magner’s report said that Rumsey was southbound on Clay Lick in a left curve, going downhill, when the car left the road. The car continued down an embankment and into a yard where it overturned onto the roof. The homeowner told police he heard a loud noise and saw the vehicle sliding across his yard into the driveway while overturned.

Rumsey was picked up by her mother after being checked by EMS. The vehicle was towed.

A third crash also occurred on Clay Lick Road, in the 1100 block, on Oct. 30, and it involved one teen driver colliding with a second vehicle. However, no EMS assistance was required at that crash, according to the police report.
