Large sculpture to move through Nashville this week

On Dec. 6, traffic will be restricted on the south end of Van Buren Street/State Road 135 in downtown Nashville while a crane moves a large limestone sculpture to a new location.

“Dancers,” the sculpture at the corner of Van Buren and Franklin streets in front of the Artists Colony Inn, is moving to the parking lot at South Jefferson Street and Pat Reilly Boulevard.

Moving it will cost the town about $1,000.

Inn co-owner Bibianna Stutsman said that when the sculpture was placed at their corner in November 2014, it did not look like the photo of the sculpture she had approved. The original sculpture had been broken in transit and the one that was placed was a replacement carved by the same artist. She said the inn had received “more complaints than compliments” on the piece.

A Nashville Arts & Entertainment Commission member approached her about having it moved more than a year ago and she agreed, she said.

The owners are interested in having a different piece of art placed there “as part of supporting the community,” Stutsman said, but they want to see and approve it first.

Town police and other employees will help block off traffic on South Van Buren and Pat Reilly Boulevard as the statue moves from the Artists Colony corner to the town-owned parking lot behind The Chocolate Moose.

The moving process is expected to start at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. If the weather doesn’t allow the move that day, it’ll be postponed to Dec. 13, and if the weather still doesn’t allow it, the move will be postponed to March, said Nashville Arts & Entertainment Commission President Nancy Crocker.

To make room for Dancers, a sculpture created by BETA teens, “All Together Now,” has moved from the Pat Reilly parking lot to the yard in front of Brown County Junior High School. Artist Brad Cox installed it in its new home in late November.
