On Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, we lost a wonderful, caring son, husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. Manuel Guzman lost his battle with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, at the age of 70. He died peacefully in his Bloomington, Indiana home.

Manuel was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Merdedes, Texas to Rafael Guzman Jr. and Victoria Bernal Guzman.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley (Scott) Guzman. His high school sweetheart, Shirley has known Manuel since she was 14 years old and doesn’t remember a time when she didn’t love him.

He is also survived by his mother; loving children; and grandchildren, Melissa (Guzman) Groenewold (husband, Matthew), Charles (Chuck) Manuel Guzman (wife, Stella), Levi Rafael Groenewold and Arizona Hope Guzman.

Manuel was a wonderful father and proud grandfather who loved his family more than anything in the world. Always one for family gatherings, he loved to celebrate holidays and to go on family vacations. He worshiped his grandchildren and left them with a lifetime of fun memories.

Manuel graduated from Brown County High School, Porter Business College, and attended Ivy Tech and IUPUI of Columbus, Indiana. An avid learner, he took classes for over 25 years so that he was always “prepared for the next opportunity.” He never liked the word “can’t” and was never satisfied with less than his best effort. He believed in the importance of education and taking advantage of all available opportunities. In the tradition of his loving parents who worked tirelessly to give him all that they could, including a college education, he worked to ensure that his two children valued education. Among his proudest accomplishments were to have two children and two grandchildren with college educations.

In 2001, he retired as senior engineer from Cummins Engine Company after 32 years of service. Always enamored with his job at Cummins, he worked his way up from block line to engineer. He made it clear to all who knew him that he was grateful for and valued the opportunities that Cummins offered him.

Upon retiring from Cummins, he and his wife fulfilled a lifelong dream and moved to Florida to enjoy the beach life. Manuel and Shirley loved walking on the beach every day. Never one to waste the benefits afforded him, he was always proud to report that “today” was the last time he had walked the beach.

In 2012, the Guzmans returned to their Eagle Pointe condo in Bloomington, Indiana to be close to family.

A fanatic for active living, he loved golf, tennis, yoga and walking. He was a music lover who enjoyed practicing with his guitar. Although he said he wasn’t very good at playing the guitar, his family knew better. Phyllis Scott always had the best time dancing with him because he was the only one who could dance the two-step with her.

In February of 2013, Manuel was diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy. He was adamant that he would live his life to the fullest and do all that he could to contribute to better understanding and to ultimately eliminate the disease. He participated in the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Center’s (IADC) clinical core research study from 2013 to present.

His family sincerely thanks the Alzheimer’s Association (Indianapolis and Bloomington chapters) and IU Hospice of Bloomington for all their help and support.

El 25 de diciembre del año 2017, hemos perdido a nuestro querido hijo, esposo, padre y abuelo. Manuel Guzman, falleció después de luchar contra Atrofia Cortical Posterior, un trastorno degenerativo poco frecuente que se asocia con la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Falleció en paz a los 70 años de edad en la comodidad de su casa en Bloomington, Indiana.

Fue hijo del fallecido Rafael Guzman Jr y de Victoria Bernal Guzman. Nació en Mercedes, Texas el 23 de octubre en el año 1947.

A Manuel le sobrevive su esposa de 49 años de matrimonio y también su novia de la escuela secundaria. Shirley conoció a Manuel cuando tenía 14 años y ella no recuerda momentos sin amarlo a su querido Manuel.

También le sobreviven su madre (Victoria Guzman) y sus hijos y nietos: la hija, Melissa “Missy” (Guzman) Groenewold y su yerno Matthew Raymond Groenewold, el hijo, Charles “Chuck” Manuel Guzman y su nuera, Stella Guzman, su nieto, Levi Rafael Groenewold y su nieta, Arizona Guzman. Además, le sobreviven su cuñada, Phyllis Scott, su cuñado, Michael Scott y su suegro, Jack Quincy Scott.

Fue buen padre y abuelo orgulloso. Para él, la familia valió más que todo tesoro del mundo. Le gustaba pasar tiempo libre, los días festivos y los viajes con la familia. Le encantaron sus nietos y ellos tienen muy buenos recuerdos de las aventuras con su abuelo.

Se graduó de Brown County High School (IN) y también de Porter Business College (IN). Asistió a Ivy Tech y a IUPUI en Columbus, Indiana. Como fanático del aprendizaje, ha tomado clases a nivel universitario por unos 25 años. Siempre quería estar listo para las nuevas oportunidades. No soportó la idea de imposibilidades. Y sólo salió satisfecho con su mejor esfuerzo e intento. En la tradición del ejemplo de sus padres cariñosos, quienes trabajaron sin descanso para darle todo posible incluso una educación universitaria, él les enseñó el valor de la educación a sus dos hijos. Estaba muy orgulloso de tener dos hijos y dos nietos con educación universitaria.

En 2001, se jubiló de Cummins Engine Company como Ingeniero Mayor después de unos 32 años de servicio. Siempre quería su puesto en Cummins y siempre sentía agradecido las oportunidades que recibió. Le contaba a todos el orgullo y el agradecimiento que sentía por toda oportunidad que tuvo en la vida. Después de jubilarse, realizó un sueño y se mudó a Florida para estar cerca de las playas hermosas y blancas. No quería perder ningún segundo de alegría e insistió en dar un paseo en la playa por lo menos una vez al día.

En 2012, la pareja Guzman y también la madre, Victoria Guzman regresaron a su condo en Eagle Pointe Bloomington, Indiana para estar más cerca de la familia suya.

Como hombre bien activo, le encantaron el golf, el tenis, el yoga y el dar paseos. También le gustó música y tocó la guitarra. A su cuñada, Phyllis Scott, siempre le gustaba bailar con Manuel porque fue el único caballero con quién podía bailar el Two-Step.

En 2012, se le diagnosticó con Atrofia Cortical Posterior. Manuel quería que se entendiera mejor y que se curara tal enfermedad. Para mejorar el conocimiento de la comunidad médica, se involucró en estudios con Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Todavía sigue con su participación en tales investigaciones.
