Mary Lynn “Mickie” Williams, 92, of Nashville, Indiana, passed on peacefully Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018.
A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at St. David’s in Bean Blossom.
Mickie was born June 18, 1925, in a rugged little mountain town of Hayden, Colorado, the second daughter to Bert and Marian (Bischel) Seip. She was married in Plymouth, Indiana, Dec. 30, 1947, to Air Force 1st Lt. John Merriwether Williams of Washington, Georgia.
Mickie graduated from Lindenwood College for Women in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and taught school in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico, before her marriage. Afterward, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, briefly before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where their first child, John Jr., was born in 1949.
Their first daughter, Ann Cavanaugh, was born in 1952 in Texas City, Texas. Their second daughter, Sarah Hill, was born in Plymouth, Indiana, in 1954. Mickie moved many times throughout her life and was always quick to meet the new neighbors and become part of her new community.
When they moved in 1958 to Nashville, Indiana, where there was no kindergarten, Mickie created a preschool in the Village Green Building, while getting a master’s degree in education from Indiana University. In 1966, the family moved to Indianapolis where Mickie worked as a kindergarten teacher in the Indianapolis school system until her retirement in 1988. She and her husband were founding members of the Indianapolis Hiking Club.
They retired to Brown County in a home they designed with a studio for Mickie’s ceramics and basket weaving hobbies. She and John were charter members of St. David’s Episcopal Church.
Mickie loved tiny things and people almost unconditionally. Perhaps that is why so many people in so many places loved Mickie.
She is survived by her three children, John Williams and Ann Woods, both of Bloomington, Indiana, and Sarah Noggle of Nashville, Indiana; a nephew, Robin Knight, and niece, Nancy Smart, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and nine grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Brown County Humane Society, the Historical Society, or St. David’s.
