Free drum, guitar lessons for teens offered Tuesdays
Free music lessons are available for area teens, ages 12 to 18, at the Brown County Enrichment for Teens Association Inc. (BETA) Center, upstairs at 45 S. Jefferson St.
Free drum sessions by Guy Knaus are offered from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Free guitar lessons by Nathan Dillon continue from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The BETA Center is open from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays when school is in session.

Young Artist Show slated at art guild in February
Artists younger than 18 can enter the annual Young Artist Show at the Brown County Art Guild.
Artwork and the $15 fee can be brought to the guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3 or between noon and 4 p.m. Feb. 4.
A total of five awards will be given: Best of Show, $150; first place, $125; second place, $100; third place, $75; and honorable mention, $50.
Only one entry per applicant is allowed. The entry cannot previously shown at the guild. Works must be professionally framed two-dimensional work, in any media except fine art photography.
All artwork must be available for sale at fair market value and remain on display for the duration of the free exhibit, Feb. 9 though March 4. A 40-percent contribution to the guild will be made for any work sold during the show.
During February, the guild is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays, or by appointment other days.
A reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3 will include awards presented at 3 p.m. Artists can retrieve their work after the reception or call to schedule an appointment.

Patron, senior shows hanging downtown
The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is hosting its annual patron and senior shows through Feb. 3.
This exhibit features a variety of styles and mediums from non-member artists. Ten awards will be given will be given for both shows: Best of Show, $150; first place, $125; second place, $100; third place, $75; and honorable mention, $50. Visitors are also asked to vote for People’s Choice in both exhibits.
The judge for both shows will be Chris Newlund, an enthusiastic plein air painter who prefers to paint from life. Her works hang in collections throughout the United States. She has been a member artist with the Brown County Art Guild since 2011.
January hours at the guild are Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment on other days.
A reception for the artists will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, with awards presented at 3 p.m.

2018 Hoosier Women Artists Contest open
All women artists in Indiana are eligible to enter the 2018 Hoosier Women Artists contest through Friday, Jan. 26.
The contest is organized by Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Treasurer Kelly Mitchell and the Indiana Arts Commission. Winners will have their artwork displayed Mitchell’s and Crouch’s offices at the Statehouse for one year, to be viewed by thousands of school groups, visitors and staff who explore the building annually.
Brown County artist Charlene Marsh was one of the artists chosen last year.
Visual art projects, including drawing, painting and photography, can be entered. Artwork is judged by a panel that includes Crouch, Mitchell and peer artists coordinated by the IAC.
Pieces of art also will be selected by First Lady Janet Holcomb, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Auditor Tera Klutz and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick to display in their offices.
Only one entry is allowed per artist. It must be wall art only, including a frame and hanging wires; it cannot be any bigger than 42 by 60 inches, including frame, and cannot be any heavier than 60 pounds.
Submissions can be made on the IAC application system at grantinterface.com/Process/Apply?urlkey=indianaarts. Applicants will need to create a username and password and select “Hoosier Women Artists” as the program name.
A reception to honor selected artists will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6 at the Statehouse.
Apply for grants through state commission
Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) Arts Project Support and Arts Operating Support I grant applications for 2018-19 are now available.
Guidelines for these grants and the link to establish an IAC online account can be found at browncountygives.org.
The deadline for grant applications is March 1.

Shared art studio space launching in town
B3 Gallery is creating a space for artists and the community to come together.
S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space,” will be be on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is envisioned as a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.
S3 will provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.
The organizers are seeking “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space,” which is “in its infancy.”
Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.

B3 Gallery, 61 W. Main St., is seeking additional Hoosier artwork to display.
All varieties of 3-D work are sought, as well as 2-D space for artists not currently affiliated with a local gallery.
