Tutoring sessions for teens start this week

Area junior high and high school students can get tutoring weekdays at either school.

A permission slip signed by the student’s parent or guardian is required. Slips can be picked up during office hours at the junior high office, 95 Schoolhouse Lane, and high school office, 235 Schoolhouse Lane, and from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Brown County Enrichment for Teens Association Inc. (BETA) Center, upstairs at 45 S. Jefferson St.

Beginning this week, sessions at the junior high are offered from 3 to 4 p.m. after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

At the high school, sessions are offered from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. before school and from 10:50 to 11:20 a.m. during study hall on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The BETA tutoring program is funded by grants from the Coalition for a Drug Free Brown County.

Sign up for electrical classes at career center

A new round of electrical classes will begin Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Brown County Career Resource Center.

Students take six classes to prepare for the local licensure test, two at a time for 12 weeks each. The program takes a year to finish. Classes are taught from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Discounts offered for multiple class enrollments

The Brown County Career Resource Center offers discounts for multiple enrollments or for friends who enroll in classes at the same time. The discount does not apply to Ivy Tech classes.

Statehouse accepting page applications

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Senate and House of Representatives are accepting applications for the Senate and House page programs. Students ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The 2018 session will conclude by March 14. Pages are scheduled for Mondays to Thursdays starting at 8:30 a.m. and dismissing at 3:30 p.m. Serving as a page is considered an excused absence from school.

Pages can to join State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) or State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) during the legislative session; assist staff with age-appropriate tasks; and tour the governor’s office, the Indiana Supreme Court and the House and Senate chambers.

Sign language classes available at CRC

American Sign Language classes are offered at the Brown County Career Resource Center. A new beginning class will start in February. Classes run from 6 to 8 p.m. for eight weeks.

High school seniors can apply for Simon scholarships

BLOOMINGTON — Simon Youth Community Scholarships will make awards to members of the Class of 2018 who live near a Simon mall.

Students in zip codes 47448 and 47435 are eligible. They will receive up to $1,500 toward tuition and other expenses. The application period ends Feb. 15.

A regional Award of Excellence also will be given. Those students will have the opportunity to receive $10,000 — $2,500 for up to four years.

Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those who are first-generation college students also will be given close consideration.

High school equivalency class times set each week

Classes focused on the high school equivalency assessment exam — formerly called GED classes — are taught year-round from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St.

Students who cannot attend then can arrange instruction by appointment or by distance learning.

Those enrolled in adult education may be eligible for free job training through WorkOne.

Small-business counseling available for free

The Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St., offers individual small-business counseling sessions through the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

There is no charge for the sessions, which meet in the morning on the first Thursday of every month. An appointment is required.

High school teachers, get free supplies

BLOOMINGTON — High school teachers in Brown, Greene, Lawrence, Monroe and Owen counties are eligible to shop for supplies at Teachers Warehouse in Bloomington.

The warehouse, 524 N. Fairview St., has resumed regular hours: From 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Teachers Warehouse, a nonprofit organization, was launched in 2004 by the Bloomington Rotary Club. It has grown to serve public school teachers in five counties, with support from all area Rotary clubs as well as individuals, organizations and businesses. The warehouse is totally volunteer-powered, with 80 regular and special-event volunteers.
