Jan. 19

Varsity

Brown County 40, West Vigo 11

BC: 10 8 15 7 — 40

WV: 0 3 2 6 — 11

Brown Co. (9-8, 11th WIC East): Dasia Wilkerson 1 FG, 2 TP; Allison Stogsdill 5 FG, 3-3 FT, 13 TP; Anna Fleetwood 2 FG, 1 3P, 2-2 FT, 9 TP; Aubrey Hollander 1 FG, 2 TP; Gracie Matlock 5 FG, 0-1 FT, 10 TP; Abigail Hollander 1 FG, 2 TP; Savannah Lovins 1 FG, 2 TP.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles used a stifling defense to pick up the win in a WIC crossover game matchup with the Vikings from West Vigo, 40-11. Both teams struggled with the offense in the first half, with Brown County holding a 12-3 advantage late in the second quarter, until a 6-0 run stretched the lead to 18-3 headed into the locker room. The Eagles finally got things rolling on the other end of the floor as they used a 15-point third quarter to stretch the lead to 33-5 heading into the final quarter. Next up for the Eagles is a visit to Brownstown Central tomorrow.

Varsity

Brownstown Central 63, Brown County 33

BR: 18 13 17 15 — 63

BC: 12 6 10 5 — 33

Brown Co. (9-9): Dasia Wilkerson 2 3P, 0-4 FT, 4 TP; Allison Stogsdill 4 3P, 3-4 FT, 11 TP; Anna Fleetwood 2-4 FT, 2 TP; Aubrey Hollander 3 3P, 1-3 FG, 9 TP; Gracie Matlock 2 3P, 0-3 FT, 4 TP; Abigail Hollander 1 3P, 3 TP.

Coach’s comments: The Eagles couldn’t pull off back-to-back wins in as many days as they ran into a talented Brownstown Central squad. The Eagles battled hard to keep the game close throughout the first half as they faced a 13-point deficit headed into halftime. But Brownstown Central proved too tough on this day, as they continued to slowly stretch the lead and cruised to the win.

WRESTLING

Jan. 18

Brown County 42, Owen Valley 27

Coach’s comments: The Eagles finished their senior night with a 42-27 win over the Owen Valley Patriots. Winners for the Eagles included Katlyn Butcher, Kenny Eason, Ben Rygiel and Levi Mullins; also picking up forfeits for the Eagles included Bryce Denton, Justin Burns, Christian Fouts and Matthew Duncan. The Eagles recognized seven seniors:

Katlyn Butcher: Butcher has won the IHSGW South Regional and will be wrestling at the IHSGW state finals tonight (Jan. 19). She is the first lady Eagle to win a regional title as well as the first to represent Brown County at the IHSGW state meet.

Cody Hobson: Although he didn’t wrestle last night, he was a great asset to the team. Cody struggled through injuries throughout the normal season before having to walk away from the mat permanently due to back injuries.

Ben Rygiel: Rygiel finished his senior season with a great win. He was down by points going into the third period until he escaped and then sealed his win by taking down his opponent.

Justin Burns: Burns received a forfeit but is back with the Eagles this year after taking last year off. He was made a captain of the team and has done a tremendous job this year.

Levi Mullins: Levi was made captain this year and has also done a great job leading the team. For those who know Levi, to say he has struggled in the past might be an understatement, but in the past two years he has really turned it around. Currently, Levi is tied for the most matches won. He is also earned himself the No. 2 spot on all-time reversals for the Eagles. As of now, he has 43 reversals. Finally, going into the WIC tournament, Levi is seeded second.

Matthew Duncan: Duncan started wrestling as a junior but was unable to wrestle most of the season due to a hand injury. However, this year, he has made great strides and has picked up six pins thus far.

Danielle Rigdon: Danielle has been a fantastic manager for the Eagles. In many ways, being a manager on a wrestling team goes unnoticed and unappreciated. However, her knowledge and ability to keep the records book organized will be greatly missed.
