Local Scottish society plans dinner

BLOOMINGTON — The Scottish Society of Brown County and greater Bloomington will host its 27th annual Burns dinner, in honor of poet Robbie Burns, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

The event will be at the Bloomington American Legion No. 18, 1800 W. Third St. The dinner will include a formal toast to the food, haggis, and music by the Highland Reign and the Southern Indiana Pipes and Drums. The Scottish Country Dancers will perform a ceilidth, a dance in which couples can join. Everyone is welcome.

The event costs $33 per person.

Forest preservation, logging discussion at library

Sandy Messner, outreach director for the Indiana Forest Alliance, will discuss issues regarding forest preservation and logging at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Brown County Public Library. The event will be in lower-level room B, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Benefit concert, dinner for Fords planned

BEAN BLOSSOM — Don Ford and his mother, Ruby Ford, lost their home to fire recently. A benefit dinner and concert are planned for Sunday, Jan. 28 at St. David’s Episcopal Church. The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m.; the concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Musicians include David Miller, the Lean and the Plenty band, Tommy Simmons, Frank Jones, Rick Clayton and Chuck Wills.

The suggested donation is $10.

Health clinic celebrates grand opening Monday at high school

A new primary care clinic opened Jan. 23 at Brown County Schools’ Eagle Park, 1749 State Road 46 East near Brown County State Park.

The clinic is open for anyone who pays a monthly membership fee. The fee covers clinic visits and many medications and lab procedures.

A grand opening celebration will take place in the Goldberg Room at Brown County High School from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29.

The health and wellness center will host an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Meet, ask questions of your state legislators

State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) and State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) plan to attend Meet Your Legislators starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at the County Office Building.

The event, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Brown County in partnership with Farm Bureau, will be in the second-floor Salmon Room at 201 Locust Lane.

Koch represents Indiana Senate District 44, which includes Brown County, Lawrence County and parts of Bartholomew, Jackson and Monroe counties; May represents Indiana House District 65, which includes Brown County, most of Lawrence County and portions of Jackson, Johnson and Monroe counties.

The snow date is Saturday, Feb. 10.

‘Komedy spelling bea,’ chili cook-off set

Psi Iota Xi sorority will sponsor its annual Komedy Spelling Bea chili cook-off and silent auction Saturday, Feb. 3 at Brown County High School. The snow date is Saturday, Feb. 24.

The cook-off, in the high school cafeteria, and silent auction, near the front entrance, begin at 5 p.m.; the “bea” will take place in the auditorium starting at 7 p.m.

Entrance to the event costs $5 per person or $20 per family. Diners can vote on the chili by adding cash to their favorite choices’ cup. The contestant with the most cash wins. Local “celebrity” contestants will be in both the cook-off and the “bea.”

Proceeds will go toward Brown County scholarships to help with local music, art, literature, speech and hearing needs.

Sign up to become a master naturalist

An Indiana Master Naturalist program will be offered from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 6 to March 27 at the Brown County Soil & Water Conservation District office at the fairgrounds.

Registration costs $50 per person or $75 per couple in the same household. Registration and payment are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at the SWCD office, 802 Memorial Drive.

The class will bring together natural resource specialists with students to foster learning and understanding of state plants, wildlife, water and soil. It also will promote volunteerism in the community.

Learn to research the history of your house

The Brown County Historical Society is offering a new class, “How to Research the History of your House.” It will be taught from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays in February at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Students are advised to bring a laptop computer or tablet if possible.

The $20 class fee can be dropped off between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. by Friday, Feb. 2 at the History Center, or mailed to P.O. Box 668, Nashville, IN 47448.

Daddy-Daughter Dance planned this month

The annual Daddy-Daughter Dance will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at the Seasons Lodge Conference Center. The evening includes dancing, crafts, games, pictures, food and more. Formal wear is encouraged.

Reservations and payment will be required to attend. The cost is $20 per couple and $8 for each additional child, ages 3 and up.

Raptor center requests sheets, towels

Indiana Raptor Center Inc., the bird-of-prey rehabilitation center in Nashville, is in need of clean, used sheets, pillowcases and towels.

Donations of these items can be dropped off at the raptor center any afternoon by appointment, as the center is closed for tours until March 1. Call 812-988-8990 for directions and to notify personnel of your arrival.

The center also accepts cash donations to help feed animals in its care.

Teen Time meets at library Wednesdays

Youth meet Wednesdays at Baptist church

HAMBLEN TWP. — A program for children and teens at Unity Baptist Church begins with a meal served at 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

For children ages 4 through high school, the Word of Life program includes a singing challenge, Scripture memorization and study, socializing and games. With an emphasis on “foundational truths from the Bible,” the program meets weekly through the school year at the church, 7361 Spearsville Road.

The Young Adult Hangout group meets at 6:30 p.m. most Friday nights for dinner, fellowship and spiritual discussion.

The Brown County Public Library will host free, short, legal consultations between 3 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 3.

Local attorneys will volunteer their time to help with legal questions on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is sponsored by Legal Aid District 11.
