A Columbus man is facing a felony charge for walking into an acquaintance’s home uninvited and rifling through the residents’ belongings.

Errick M. Rutherford, 31, was charged Jan. 25 in Brown Circuit Court with residential entry, a Level 6 felony, and criminal trespass, a Class A misdemeanor.

The residents at the home in the 7900 block of Georgetown Road told Brown County dispatch that on Jan. 9, Rutherford pulled into their driveway, told them he was driving a stolen vehicle and asked for a license plate.

One of the residents, having seen a man outside the window, opened the door of the home and Rutherford walked in without being invited, the police report said. The report said that Rutherford went through the entire house, scavenging through their items, and then went into the bathroom and shut the door. When he came out, one of the residents found the sink full of water with a hair straightener in it.

Rutherford then went outside and started going through a vehicle on the property, the report said. He left before police arrived and pulled into the driveway of another home in the 8300 block of Georgetown Road.

The resident of that home told police that the driver stayed in the driveway for about 10 minutes, flashing his lights, and that he was “fidgeting all over the truck.” The truck left and headed toward Bartholomew County, almost backing into a fence across the street in the process, the woman told police.

The first home had several “no trespassing” signs posted on it, the police report said. The residents reported nothing missing from their home or vehicle.
