Lions club’s annual grant cycle changes

The Brown County Lions Club has changed its grant cycle to coincide with the fiscal year that runs from July 1 through June 30.

Organizations wishing to submit a grant application request in July should watch for information in the Brown County Democrat in mid-June.

TRIAD reports volunteer work for last quarter

In October, November and December, 13 volunteers served with TRIAD of Brown County, plus two in training.

TRIAD is seeking more volunteers to be part of its team.

During the quarter, volunteers logged 529 hours, 2,606 miles and 137 home visits. Volunteers also sent birthday cards and thank-you cards.

Food from Midwest Food Bank was picked up, packaged and delivered to about 32 Brown County families each month. Volunteers delivered about 150 Thanksgiving Day meals prepared by EMT volunteers. TRIAD volunteers also assembled and delivered Christmas gift boxes to all clients in early December.

Volunteers and 31 clients attended the “Believe: A Brown County Christmas” holiday variety show at the Brown County Playhouse. Transportation was provided by Access of Brown County.

TRIAD volunteers also provided and served lunch for about 60 Midwest Food Bank volunteers in Indianapolis.

Work on a TRIAD cookbook continues; recipes are welcome from all clients.

A Friends of TRIAD fundraising program, headed by Keith Baker with assistance from the sheriff and Tony Sciscoe, is getting generous donations from the community.

Addiction recovery support offered at church

From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 North, hosts weekly recovery support meetings, known as Battlefield For Freedom, for people struggling with addiction. For more information, call Melissa Tatman at 812-320-9838.

Women’s support group meets weekly

A women’s recovery group meets at 6:30 p.m. Mondays for about 90 minutes.

Literacy coalition meets third Tuesdays

Brown County Literacy Coalition Board meets at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month downstairs at Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Feb. 20.

Anyone interested in learning more about how to support early-childhood literacy is welcome.

Support group for loss of child

Compassionate Friends, a national self-help organization for families that have experienced the death of a child, meets at 6:30 p.m. on third Tuesdays at Nashville United Methodist Church. The next meeting will be Feb. 20 at the church, 36 S. Jefferson St.

Compassionate Friends of South Central Indiana is a group that reaches out to all people who are grieving the loss of a child with love, understanding and hope.

Support group for family members of addicts

COLUMBUS — A support group for families of opioid addicts will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 at Mill Race Center.

The Family Hope and Support Group will provide “an emotionally safe and non-judgmental place” for participants. It meets the fourth Thursday of each month.

There is no charge to attend. Attendance and personal information will be kept private by facilitators Ray Morris, licensed clinical social worker; Leah Boas, licensed social worker; and Shannon Thallis.

Alcoholics Anonymous has meetings most weekdays at several Brown County locations:

8 p.m. Mondays — Open discussion meetings, Sycamore Valley Community Center, 746 Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds

6:30 p.m. Tuesdays — Closed men’s discussion meetings, Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship, 602 State Road 135 North

8 p.m. Tuesdays — Closed literature study, The Fieldhouse, 98 W. Washington

8 p.m. Wednesdays — Open discussion meetings, Sycamore Valley Community Center at the fairgrounds

9:30 a.m. Fridays — Open literature discussions, lower-level meeting room, Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane

Open meetings are available to anyone interested in this program of recovery from alcoholism. Non-alcoholics can attend open meetings as observers.

Closed meetings are for AA members only, or for those who have a drinking problem and want to stop.

Vaccines for uninsured available at health department

The Brown County Health Department, on the second floor of the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, is offering all immunizations free of charge for uninsured adults.

Vaccines include tetanus, hepatitis A and B, dTap, MMR, PVC13, PPSV23, varicella and others.

Ministry provides cancer support program

GNAW BONE — Nondenominational group Heart of Christ Ministries, 5181 State Road 46 East, offers a program called Thriving Hope Cancer Care Ministry.

Sponsored by Our Journey of Hope from the cancer treatment centers of America, the ministry provides people touched by cancer with help and spiritual counsel specific to the needs of cancer patients, caregivers or loved ones. Leaders completed a Bible-based cancer care training program.
