Karen L. (Moore) Richards, 75, of Brown County, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Feb. 16, 2018, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.

The Rev. Mary Cartwright will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St. in Nashville. Friends may call from noon until service time Saturday at the church.

Karen was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Indianapolis, to the late Milton R. and Ella (Vaughn) Moore. She was a 1961 graduate of Southport High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University in 1965 and her master’s degree in special education from Indiana University in 1971.

Karen retired in 2002 from Indianapolis Public Schools where she taught as an elementary teacher and a special education teacher. Prior to that, she taught at both Indian Creek and Clark Pleasant schools.

Karen was a member of Nashville United Methodist Church and a former member of Morgantown United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Brown County Historical Society and Tri Sigma Sorority. Karen was a former 4-H leader, Cub Scout leader and a vacation Bible school teacher, all in Brown County. She volunteered at the Indiana Women’s Prison as a counselor and worked the polls at the Gatesville precinct.

Karen enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, caring for her many animals and wintering in Sanibel, Florida, with her husband. She loved spending time her family, especially her grandchildren from Brown County to Chicago.

Karen is survived by her husband of 51 years, David D. Richards, whom she married April 2, 1966, in Indianapolis. She is also survived by her children, Beth E. (Phil) Rimstidt of Brown County and Clark D. (Karin) Richards of Skokie, IL; brother, Stephen V. (Diane) Moore of Ocala, FL; and seven grandchildren.

Services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
