Local students compete in regional spelling bee
BLOOMINGTON — Brown County Junior High School eighth-grader Samantha Smith finished third in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 10 at the Monroe County Public Library.
More than a dozen other school champions from south-central Indiana participated, ranging in age from third through eighth grades. Other local spellers were:
- Nathan Crenshaw, Brown County Intermediate School, Grade 6
- Jessica Blevins, Helmsburg Elementary, Grade 3
- Rosalyn McGrayel, Sprunica Elementary School, Grade 4
- Alayna Jacobus, Van Buren Elementary School, Grade 4
Jacobus made it to the third round at the regional bee.
Smith, Jacobus and McGrayel also competed at the 2017 regional bee, and Crenshaw competed at the 2016 regional bee.
The winner, eighth-grader Daniel Larsen of Jackson Creek Middle School Bloomington, was awarded a trip to the National Spelling Bee semifinals and championship finals May 27 to June 1 in National Harbor, Maryland. He also won the regional bee last year.

High school students named Rising Stars
The Indiana Association of School Principals have recognized the following Brown County High School students as the Rising Stars of Indiana Class of 2019: Samuel Bowman, Baelyn Koester and Chase Watson.
Each Indiana high school could choose up to four juniors based on their academic achievement. Each recognized student received a certificate of achievement.
This was the second year for the recognition program, in which 1,025 high school juniors from 265 schools were honored.
Elizabeth Jackson
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Elizabeth Jackson of Nineveh was named to the Olivet Nazarene University dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester.
To qualify, a student must have attained a semester grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale. Olivet Nazarene University is an accredited Christian, liberal arts university 50 miles south of Chicago.
Emily Walker
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Communication major Emily Walker of Nashville was named to the Geneva College dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester.
To be eligible for the list, students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.6 while passing 12 credit hours or more.
ISU dean’s list
TERRE HAUTE — The following area students were named to Indiana State University’s dean’s list for the fall semester of 2017: Collin Graeber, Victoria Kelp, Brennen Maus, Quinn Purtee and Airika Hamblen, all of Nashville.
To be eligible for the list, students must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Isaac Gluesenkamp
INDIANAPOLIS — Isaac Gluesenkamp of Nashville, a biology major, has been named to the Butler University dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester.
To be eligible, undergraduate students must earn a grade-point average in the top 20 percent of all eligible students in their college of enrollment.
IUPUC fall 2017 dean’s list
COLUMBUS — Indiana University-Purdue University named the following students to its dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester: Naomi D. Fleetwood and Victoria Louise Rudolph of Freetown; Alec Billings, Chayli Dakota Brock and April Spires of Morgantown; Mallory Dawn Baker, Cheyenne Gilles, Lori Noel Haggard, Tyler Allen Kelp, Jessica Lynn Pittman, Lacey Jane Stinson and Jennifer Unsworth, all of Nashville; and Bradley Aaron Olivo, Karen Alice Smiar and Dylan Streeval, all of Nineveh.
Dean’s list students must have earned at least a 3.7 term grade-point average.
