Police: Man punched woman for being asked not to wake child

Police say a Brown County man became verbally abusive and punched a female relative three times in the face after he was asked to not wake a child.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool reported seeing a broken door jam on the floor and blood splattered down the hallway walls and floor when he arrived at a home in the 3000 block of Grandma Barnes Road on March 11, a probable cause affidavit states.

Patrick Odaniels, 55, was talking on the phone with Brown County Dispatch while Pool went to check on the female victim. Pool wrote that she had blood from her nose up and down her sleeves and on her face. Pool said two children were in the bathroom with her and one was “shaking in fear.”

Pool helped the woman stop her nose from bleeding. The woman said that Odaniels was laying in bed with one of the children and was waking the child up. She went back to the bedroom to tell him to leave the child alone and Odaniels became irate, the affidavit said.

The woman said Odaniels began cussing her out and punched her three times in the nose. She said she pushed him away and he went out on the porch. When she tried to get away from him to go into the bathroom, he followed her, the affidavit said.

Deputy Josh Stargell, who was talking to Odaniels, placed him under arrest. Odaniels was hysterically crying and telling the officers to take him to jail repeatedly, the report said.

EMS arrived to look at the woman’s injuries, but she refused medical treatment.

Earlier that evening, Stargell, Pool and Sgt. Bill Southerland had gone to the home to take a report of a domestic battery that happened the previous night, but that the victim in that case did not want to give the police any information.

A breath test administered at the jail showed Odaniels’ blood-alcohol content at 0.26, more than three times the legal level of intoxication. He was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into jail.

Odaniels was charged March 12 with Level 6 felony domestic battery.
