Register to create batik art on paper

A workshop which combines drawing, painting, wax, embellishing and dyeing with inks and watercolors is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14.

The batik on paper class will be taught at B3 Gallery, upstairs at 61 W. Main St. Pre-registration is required for the workshop, which costs $65 per person.

Participants can create two or three small pieces. The class is not recommended for children under 12.

See work of early Indiana printmakers at gallery

A rare exhibit of the Brown County Art Gallery’s entire early Indiana print collection, featuring etchings by L.O. Griffith, Kenneth Reeve, Will Vawter and more, will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 14.

The collection was recently reframed to museum standards with a grant from the Indiana Historical Society.

In addition, current printmakers from three major print organizations will be exhibiting and selling their work. At least 30 printmakers from across Indiana are expected to participate. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation.

The Indiana Historical Society also funded the conservation and framing of 18 rare sketches by Vawter that were used as illustrations for the James Whitcomb Riley poetry books. The sketches, along with original illustrations and a collection of Vawter paintings, will be exhibited as well. The sketches feature people from Brown County in everyday situations.

The exhibit will be open to the public Sunday, April 15 through May 13.

Visit ‘watermedia’ exhibit at art guild

A free exhibit, “Focus on Watermedia” will include workshops and artist talks at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., during April.

The focus includes two floors of new work by guild artist members, and “Meet the Muses,” a display from the permanent collection.

Competition, show to honor artist Will Vawter

GREENFIELD — The Will Vawter Art Competition, a juried art exhibit, is open to Indiana artists who work in oil, acrylic and watercolor.

The show honors John William Vawter, a self-taught artist who won multiple prizes in the Hoosier Salon and had a studio in Brown County.

The show will launch with a reception and awards ceremony Friday, April 13 at Hancock County Arts Twenty North Gallery. The exhibit will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, April 14 through May 5.

Sponsored by The Hancock County Arts Council, awards range from $100 to $1,000.

Dinner theater performances slated at inn

Performances of “Tumbleweed: A Town of the Old West” will be presented as dinner theater at Artists Colony Inn.

Shows start at 6 p.m. at the inn, 105 S. Van Buren St. Tickets, $50 per person, include dinner.

Remaining performance dates are Saturdays, April 14 and 21, May 12 and 19, June 16 and 30, July 28, Aug. 11 and 18, Sept. 1 and 8, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, and Nov. 17.

IAC has slated Arts in the Parks dates

The Indiana Arts Commission has scheduled its Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites programs for 2018. Many of the activities are at sites in Brown County.

Projects were funded to encourage the creation of art and public engagement with art around state parks, the forest system and historic sites.

Award-winning painter Patricia Rhoden Bartels will present “a painted interpretation of spring’s foray of colors” and paint with up to 15 children at Hohen Point in Brown County State Park from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21. For Earth Day, she will paint with children in the gardens at T.C. Steele State Historic Site from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22. Materials will be provided for participating children in each case.

For the Wildflower Foray, Bartels will paint “the early morning atmospheric vista” south of the state park fire tower from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 27. She will also paint the evening sunset vista at the park’s west gate overlook from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 29.

Joseph Alexander Clancy Clements will lecture on and perform “less common instruments and traditional music in Indiana during the 18th and 19th centuries.” Three programs will take place on Saturdays at T.C. Steele site, May 12, July 14 and Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m.

Textile artist Daren Redman will conduct two fabric-dyeing workshops on Sundays at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. The workshops will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 3 and from noon to 4 p.m. July 1.

Visitors can hear Tom Roznowski on vocals and Mike Lucas on piano as they perform The Hoosier Songbook at the T.C. Steele site starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

Focusing on Indiana composers and musicians, Craig Brenner and the Crawdads will explore the blues, boogie-woogie and other music at Brown County State Park. The music will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept 1.

Bartels will present a painting demonstration at the kick-off celebration of the T.C. Steele “painting wagon” at the state historic site from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. This is dependent upon the wagon being completed by this date.

Paula Chambers will perform a lyrical hoop dance, “Falling Leaves,” at the T.C. Steele site from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

“Circus for a Day” with the Hudsucker Posse will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the T.C. Steele site. The troupe will demonstrate all of their props during a short performance and engage the audience afterward.

Art Walk moves to fourth Fridays, opens April 27

The Village Art Walk has moved from second Saturdays to fourth Fridays. Walks through downtown Nashville galleries this year will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. April 27 to Oct. 26.

The 12 participating galleries include Hoosier Artist, Hereshome, The Emerald Pencil, B3 Gallery, Ascension Fine Arts, Brown County Art Guild, 4th Sister Vintage, Chateau Thomas Winery, Spears Gallery, Brown County Craft Gallery, Trilogy Gallery and the Brown County Art Gallery.

Friday art walks will include food, music, wine tasting, demonstrations, paint-alongs and other special art events.

Artists sought to display work in local gallery

The Paint Box art gallery, 92 W. Franklin in Antique Alley, is seeking artists to display their work as panels become available.

The gallery, on the corner of Jefferson and Franklin,  displays a variety of artwork.
