Just like us, our pets need regular care to make sure they remain healthy. Fortunately, there are some common diseases that can generally be prevented by getting cats and dogs certain vaccines each year.
Every April, the Brown County Humane Society has a rabies and vaccine clinic to provide an opportunity for county residents to get these vaccines at a very low cost. It’s a service provided through the Serving Pets Outreach Team (SPOT) to ensure that our county pets are healthy and safe.
This year’s clinic will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at the Emergency Management Services building next to the Law Enforcement Center in Nashville.
Several services are available for dogs and cats, including rabies and yearly core vaccines, microchipping and nail trims for both cats and dogs.
The yearly core vaccine provided for dogs is Duramune Max 5, which aids in the prevention of canine distemper, adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza and parvovirus vaccine (MLV).
For cats, the yearly core vaccine provided is Felovax IV w/Calici, which aids in the prevention of feline rhinotracheitis, calici, panleukopenia and chlamydia psittaci.
All pets are required by law to have an up-to-date rabies vaccine. Some veterinarians will give a yearly vaccine, and some recommend a three-year booster. It’s important to know the schedule your own pet is on. The clinic provides a one-year vaccine.
Pets can receive the core vaccines with or without the rabies vaccine for just $5 per pet.
Microchipping is offered at the clinic for $5 as well. This is an important part of keeping your pets safe. If your cat or dog gets loose, microchipping is the best way to get him home quickly if he’s found. Each year, hundreds of lost pets wind up at the shelter. This is the fastest way for the shelter to reunite pets with their families.
Many people find it difficult to trim their pet’s nails on their own. Dogs can get their nails trimmed at the clinic and, for the first time, cats can get nail trims as well. This service is also $5 per pet.
Services are cash only and are available to the first 300 dogs and 300 cats on a first-come, first-served basis. All cats must be in carriers and all dogs must be leashed. Brown County residents only. Call SPOT at 812-703-0797 with questions.
