Students earn awards at state science fair
INDIANAPOLIS — Five Brown County High School students earned awards at the 30th Annual Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair on March 24 in Indianapolis.
- Katianna Richardson won the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award and the ASU Environmental Sustainability Award. Her project was titled “The impact of biodegradable plastic on soil quality.”
- Zelton Kay won the U.S. Air Force Award for Excellence. His project was titled “Micro wind turbine.”
- Mekenzie Dunnuck won the Young Female Scientific Excellence Award for her project, “Synthesis of aspirin with acid derived from natural resources.”
- Cannon Kelp won the John and Janet Davis Scholarship for his project, “Toxicity of G. lucidum extract in daphnia.”
- Abe Oliver‘s project was called “Can deep reinforcement learning solve misere combinatorial games?” It won the Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award, Best Mathematics Project, first place in 12th grade projects and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
Grant brings new instruments to students with need
Brown County Junior High School received 12 new trumpets, flutes, clarinets and trombones through a gift from the Howard Hughes Trust. Superintendent Laura Hammack reported that the donation will help students who might not otherwise be able to afford to participate in band.
Hughes, a former Brown County resident who died in 2011, counted music and art education among his greatest passions.

Twelve Brown County Junior High School art students earned awards in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program.
Teacher Laurette Roales submitted all her students’ work for consideration. Three were named state winners and nine were honorable mentions.
The state winners were Illyana Cox, Savana King and Selena Greiner. Honorable mentions included Alyssa Lunsford, Sam Normile, Freya Baldwin, Connor Lehman, Gracie Riggen, Tori Klaker, Oliver Normile, Aiden Fox and Joseph Denison.
