Police: Woman took support payment

Police say a Bloomington woman stole another woman’s child support payment and spent it at the Bean Blossom Dollar General.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Jackson took the theft report just before noon March 1, according to a probable cause affidavit filed May 7.

The caller wanted to report a theft and said that the suspect was in her car with her. When Jackson arrived at a gas station in town to meet the caller, she said the suspect, Haley C. Platter, 23, had left her car and started walking toward the Brown County Schools campus, the affidavit states.

The victim said she had let Platter stay at her house for the night, and when she woke up at around 11:30 a.m. the next day, she had received a phone call stating a child support deposit had been made. She called to get her balance and learned that she only had $2 in the account when there should have been $60 in there, the affidavit.

Customer service informed her that someone had received cash back at the Bean Blossom Dollar General before 8:30 a.m. that morning. The victim said Platter was acting “very suspicious,” so she called the Dollar General to speak with the manager.

At about noon, the manager called her back and said they remembered Platter making the transaction and that she tried to get more money out, but since it was early in the morning the store didn’t have enough cash in the drawer, the affidavit states.

Jackson saw Platter walking and asked her if she had used the woman’s child support card that morning. Platter said she did, but that the victim had given her permission to use the card to get cash out so that she could pay her water bill, according to the affidavit. Platter said she had given the cash to the victim. Jackson reported that Platter only had $5 on her. She filled out a written statement and Jackson let her go.

The victim then showed Jackson text messages that Platter had sent her, apologizing for what she did and admitting to using the money to buy drugs.

Platter was charged May 7 with theft, a Level 6 felony.
