Man who kicked officer arrested for possession

A Brown County man has been charged with multiple felonies after he ran from police, was found to be in possession of narcotics and kicked an officer who was trying to arrest him, police said.

Police were called on June 8 to a home in the 8000 block of Whispering Pines Drive. Zackery D. White, 33, was pounding on the door because his father had locked him out, according to a report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Williams.

Williams, Sgt. Scott Bowling and Deputy Austin Schonfeld all responded.

Williams reported smelling marijuana in the home, and White’s father said he must have taken it with him when he left. White’s corrections officer was also there. He told police that White was supposed to report to him today, but didn’t show up, the report said. He told the officers that White had bonded out of the Johnson County jail the day before.

Schonfeld and Williams went to speak with neighbors who were gathered on the porch. Bowling went to the back of the property to search for White.

Bowling spotted him at the back of the property. He told the officer he hid because he thought the police were going to arrest him. Bowling said they were there for him pounding on the door, and White denied that happened, the affidavit states.

Williams reported seeing something orange in White’s shorts pocket. White was hesitant to pull it out and said it was a cigarette pack. Inside were one cigarette inside and two baggies. One was a bag corner that had been tied in a knot and had something brown inside.

Williams gave the box to Bowling so he could place White under arrest. While officers were trying to handcuff him, White took off running. Bowling and Schonfeld attempted to shoot Taser probes at him, but they didn’t reach him, the report said. After a struggle, in which an officer held a Taser to his body, officers placed White in handcuffs.

White had injuries on his arms, legs and face from running through briars. EMS was dispatched to the scene. Bowling also had blood on his face and ear.

A search of White yielded a meth pipe, a bag of marijuana and a package of CBD gummies, the police report said.

During questioning, White said he did not know what the brown substance inside the baggie was, but that he thought it was “Boy,” a slang term for heroin. He gave Williams the person’s name who sold him the heroin.

White said he was just holding the cigarette box. The other baggie in the cigarette box was a clear, rock-like substance that White confirmed to be methamphetamine.

Bowling told Williams that White had kicked him while he was trying to tackle him to the ground. EMS cleaned up White’s cuts before he was taken to the Brown County jail.

On June 11, White was charged with possession of a narcotic drug, possession of methamphetamine, battery against a public official and resisting law enforcement, all Level 6 felonies.

He also was charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
