Officer’s vehicle hit at 135 North overlook

A volunteer sheriff’s deputy who was waiting to turn into the Bean Blossom overlook on State Road 135 North was rear-ended by a driver who said she was blinded by the sun.

The crash happened at about 8 a.m. June 30.

Brown County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Deputy Cecil Martin, 50, of Harrison Ridge Road, was northbound on 135 North in the curve and trying to turn into the overlook parking lot, according to a crash report by Lt. Mike Moore. Two vehicles were coming south, so Martin stopped in traffic with his left turn signal on.

Annemarie Wood, 23, of South Johnson Street, came up behind Martin and didn’t see that he had stopped because the sun was in her eyes. She struck the back of Martin’s Ford Explorer, which is owned by the county commissioners, the report said.

Martin called in the crash and checked on Wood, the report said. She complained of pain to her “entire body” and was taken to a hospital, the report said.

Martin complained of head pain; he also was taken to a hospital.

Both were wearing seat belts and both vehicles had to be towed. Total damage was estimated at between $2,500 and $5,000, the report said.
