Child care available weekdays at YMCA

Beginning Monday, Aug. 13, the Brown County YMCA will start offering child care again, for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays until Sept. 21.

Women’s Bible study planned for Fridays

A women’s Bible study using the Pricilla Shirer book, “Fervent,” will meet at 11 a.m. Fridays beginning in late August. The group will meet in a Nashville home off West Main Street. The book costs about $10. For more information, call Jessica Miller at 208-290-2406.

Market features fresh jams, jellies, produce

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Bean Blossom Farmers Market takes place in the parking lot of St. David’s church, at state roads 135 North and 45, each Friday through Aug. 31 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Market vendors are selling jellies and jams prepared this growing season. They also will have herbs, house plants, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, squash, beets, greens, pork and beef, fresh baked breads, soaps, honey, handmade paper flower, jewelry, and greeting cards, pies and cakes, cinnamon rolls and eggs for sale.

On Aug. 17, market host Rich Hill will be joined by Eli Rodriguez serving beef briquette and pulled pork sandwiches in the air-conditioned café indoors. Lemon-shake-ups are always available.

The Brown County Lions Club will be featured at the outreach community booth. Lions will have information about their services for children, families and schools, including eye testing, scholarships, community events and fundraising projects.

Monthly weave-in, spin-in slated at library

Teen and adult weavers and spinners, expert or beginner, can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library. The free program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 18 is an opportunity to share weaving and spinning projects, ideas and to ask questions. No registration is needed. Carnival for all ages set at fairgrounds Aug. 18

The Brown County Community Foundation will host a “family philanthropic carnival” with free games and prizes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Brown County 4-H fairgrounds on Memorial Drive.

Activities will include a bounce house, dunk tank, outdoor water games, ring toss, duck pond, basketball shoot, bean bag toss, mystery game, balloon dart throw, football toss, ducky derby, cornhole, civics game, tombola ticket drawing and more. There will also be a take-home craft and book giveaway.

Families can participate at each booth and collect tokens. One color of tokens will be redeemed for prizes; the other color of tokens will be used to give back to the organization of their choice. The organization with the most colored tokens at the end of the day will receive $250.

While kids play games, adults can learn about local organizations and how they can get involved.

Food will be sold from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., provided by the Brown County 4-H Council to benefit 4-H youth.

BCHS Class of ’78 reunion planned

The Brown County High School Class of 1978 will celebrate its 40-year reunion with a casual get-together from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at Salt Creek Golf Retreat.

Meet with class president Nancy (Pannell) Miller downstairs at the 19th Hole Sports Bar & Grille, 2359 State Road 46 East. Live music will begin at 8 p.m. No cover charge, advance payment or registration are needed. Food and drinks will be sold.

Guest speaker, family night planned at Baptist church

Author Paul Brewster will be the featured speaker at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19 at Rising Hope Baptist Church.

Brewster has 25 years in the pastorate, trains pastors in Haiti and India, and teaches online at Liberty University. All are welcome to attend.

A family game night also is planned at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the church, 1267 Old State Road 46. Food will be provided.

Sunday farmers market seeks more vendors

The Nashville Farmers Market is looking for more vendors. The market takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays in the parking lot at the Brown County Inn, at state roads 46 East and 135 North.

Customers have been asking for prepared food, coffee and drinks to enjoy while shopping, market organizers report. The market also still is accepting applications for vendors of honey, eggs, value-added products, bread, fine arts and other items.

Blues competition planned at dance barn

The South Central Indiana Blues Challenge 2018, Boogie to Beale, will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19 at Mike’s Dance Barn, 2277 State Road 46 West.

The all-day contest includes bands, solo and duo acts competing to win a cash prize and eligibility to enter the 2019 International Blues Challenge.

The mission of South Central Indiana Blues Society is to educate the public on the history and future of the blues, to support and promote local artists, and to preserve the blues as an American art form.

Donate blood locally on Aug. 22

The American Red Cross is asking blood donors to give now to alleviate a shortage. All types are needed, especially type O.

The next local donation opportunity will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East. Those who come to donate blood or platelets through Aug. 30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card via email.

Psi Iota Xi selling mums for fundraiser

Psi Iota Xi will have a limited amount of hardy mums for sale at the Nashville Christian Church yard from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 or until sold out.

Mums cost $8 each and may be available in burgundy, yellow, white, purple, pink or bronze. Proceeds from the Fall Mum Fundraiser will support Brown County High School scholarships and local art, music, literature, and speech and hearing needs.

Firefighters will serve fish fry Aug. 25

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Company will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on one Saturday each month, Aug. 25, Sept. 8 and Oct. 6. The fire station is at 5200 State Road 135 North.

The menu will include fish sandwiches, tenderloin sandwiches, french fries, onion rings, baked beans, slaw, desserts and drinks.

Learn to weave a trivet at free library workshop

Learn about the traditional art of willow basketry from fourth-generation weaver Viki Graber during a short presentation and weaving class Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Brown County Public Library.

Sessions at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. are offered for up to 10 participants per class. All supplies will be provided.

Graber is affiliated with Traditional Arts Indiana and has been weaving for more than 40 years.

Try yoga, cupping, cinnamon rolls this month

Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness and Leah Craig of Roots of Healing Acupuncture will provide an evening to explore general yoga and cupping at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. The event will be at Ooey Gooey Rolls, 29 E. Washington St.

Cupping is attaching small silicone cups to the skin by creating a vacuum underneath. This is done to stimulate blood flow, minimize inflammation, aid in stress relief and soften body tissue.

The $20 session is suitable for any age or fitness level. Participants should wear a tank top or v-neck shirt. With the cups in place, Weddle will guide participants through simple yoga poses using bolster pillows. After the session, Ooey Gooey cinnamon roll samples will be available.

Items sought for Ox Roast silent auction

CORDRY-SWEETWATER — The Cordry-Sweetwater Lot Owners Association is requesting product and service donations for a silent auction during its annual Ox Roast on Sept. 1.

Auction gifts will help fund CSLOA events and activities, such as Santa’s workshop, the spaghetti supper, chili cook-off, Memorial Day parade, beach concert, Fourth of July fireworks, maintenance of the library and clubhouse, and other monthly events.

The auction will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m, with item pickup at 6 p.m.

During the ox roast, barbecue sandwiches, corn on the cob, green beans, onion rings, fries, lemon shakeups and desserts will be served. Music will be provided by Naptown Revue Band from 1 to 5 p.m. Face painting, games and a merchandise raffle will take place during the event.

Dogs can swim at state park pool Sept. 4

Before the pool is drained for cleaning, Brown County State Park will allow well-behaved dogs to swim from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. One dog only per person is allowed.

The cost is $15 per dog, plus a bag of food for the humane society. Each dog must be up-to-date on vaccinations and leashed when not in the pool.

The event at the park, 1810 State Road 46 East, is sponsored by the Brown County YMCA.

Head Start fun fest slated for Sept. 12

Brown County Head Start will host a safety fun fest from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 in the Brown County IGA parking lot, 30 Hawthorne Drive. The event is free and open to the public.

The Indianapolis Colts Museum Bus will be there. Face painting and information resources for families will be available. Representatives will be on hand from the public library, veterans, Weekend Backpack program, local police and fire department. Representatives of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program also will be available.

Chamber event to appreciate members planned

The Brown County Chamber of Commerce quarterly meeting will feature its Membership Appreciation Day from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. The event hosted by HFI Mechanical and McGinley Insurance will include food, music and door prizes in the McGinley parking lot, 146 E. Main St.

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Register for cardboard boat fundraiser

SWEETWATER LAKE — Brown County Parks and Recreation will host a cardboard regatta competition, Corrugated Chaos, Saturday morning, Sept. 22.

The race will begin at 10:30 or 11 a.m., with sign-in at Sweetwater Beach beforehand.

The challenge is to design and build a boat out of corrugated cardboard, powered by one to four crew members, capable of traversing and racing a 100-yard-long course in the lake.

Awards will be given for most creative design, fastest in the county, as well as “Gilligan” (most likely to leave you stranded) and “Titanic” (most spectacular sinking) awards.

The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The cost is $10 per boat entered, or $25 per business.

Proceeds will go toward grounds upkeep and program improvements at parks and rec.

Mini-grant applications for landowners available

The Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking applications for 2019 mini-grants. The grants aid landowners looking to implement, improve and/or promote conservation techniques on their property.

Grant money is awarded through cost-sharing reimbursements. Applications must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 28. They will then be reviewed by the county soil and water board.

Rock, mineral show planned in September

The third annual Brown County Rock and Mineral Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30 at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

The free event will include exhibits of gems, jewelry, rocks, geodes, minerals and fossils, as well as youth activities, door prizes, demonstrations of gold-panning, wire-wrapping jewelry and flint-knapping (making or shaping flint tools).

Seed-saving demonstration planned at market

Torrie Rae of SEED Brown County and Ben Cohen of Small House Farm in Michigan will present a seed-saving demonstration at the Sunday farmers market Oct. 7.

From noon to 2 p.m. at the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East, visitors can get lessons on processing homestead-size seed harvests. Rae and Cohen will share information about the seed library and provide plants and seeds to process. Everyone is encouraged to bring plants and seeds to process from the seeds and plants they received through Brown County SEED earlier in the year.

Christmas drive-through light show set

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground will host Christmas at the Bean, an interactive, drive-through light show and live nativity scene. The event will run from dusk to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 28 to 30, and Friday, Dec. 14 to Thursday, Jan. 3.

Tickets available for self-guided log cabin tour

Four log homes and a Presbyterian log church will be open to ticket holders for self-guided tours between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

The tour will include a 1937 home built using logs from the 1800s, a new partial-log home, a completely renovated log home, a log home once owned by Brown County artist Marie Goth, and a 19th century log church. Homeowners will be at each location to provide history on the homes and the church.

Tickets will be available at the History Center and the Brown County Visitors Center for $10 each prior to the event. Tickets at the History Center, visitors center and log church the day of the event will cost $12. Proceeds will go to the Brown County Historical Society for programming.
