Musical comedy open at Playhouse

The new, family-friendly version of the musical comedy “Platinum Girls” includes a new artistic team of writers, advisers, directors and designers, with original songs, parodies and cover tunes.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 to 22, with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Sept. 23.

The feel-good show is about three friends clinging to their success from high school 35 years ago. The cast includes Suellen Swaney as Doris, Christine Long as Ruby Lee and Jenny Simms as Elaine.

Free music planned Saturdays at Village Green

A series of free Saturday concerts by local musicians is planned from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Village Green Pavilion, as follows:

  • Sept. 22 — The Acre Brothers
  • Sept. 29 — Hamilton Creek
  • Oct. 13 — The 1, 4, 5 Band
  • Oct. 20 — Celtica

The concerts, at West Main and Jefferson streets, are sponsored by the town of Nashville, Johnson Family Charitable Fund, Brown County Community Foundation, Brozinni’s Pizzeria, Brown County Enrichment for Teens Association Inc. (BETA) and Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission volunteers.

Art classes offered Saturdays at gallery downtown

B3 Gallery, upstairs at 61 W. Main St., will offer the following afternoon art classes:

1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 — Introduction to Bead Loom Work by Larry Davidson is for beginners. Learn how to string a bead loom, make a bracelet and finish the bracelet during this afternoon class.

1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 — Introduction to Handmade Journals by Medsker requires no prior experience. Learn the materials and techniques needed to create your own covers, liner and pages, then assemble them into a journal.

1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 — Art on Record by Medsker will use old record albums, paint, paper and found objects to create a circular mixed media art piece.

Classes range in price from $15 to $65 per person.

Artists, volunteers sought for mountain bike event

Local artists are asked to lend their art related to Brown County State Park and mountain biking for display during the Hoosier Epic Mountain Biking event, Friday, Oct. 12. The annual event will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, at the state park.

As an official sponsor of the event, the Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission will have a table to pass out local art-related literature and make contact with the 600 expected participants.

Volunteers are also sought to help both days, to greet mountain bikers and promote Brown County art. The event is supported by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission.

Register for pARTake fall workshops

PARTake painting workshops will be conducted from 2 to 4 p.m. one Saturday per month this fall at the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St. Workshops include “Autumn Landscapes” with Anabel Hopkins on Oct. 20; and “Sunflowers” with Watkins on Nov. 17.

All materials, instruction and light refreshments will be provided. Members of the Brown County Art Alliance can take the class for $35; others pay $40 per person.

Two artists featured at gallery this month

Gillian Harris and Sara Steffy McQueen are the featured artists for September at Hoosier Artist Gallery, 45 S. Jefferson St.

Harris’ work includes realistic nature drawing, painting and photographs of plants, insects, birds and other animals. Harris has illustrated field guides, encyclopedias and garden books.

McQueen paints, creates linocuts, handmade paper, collages and mythological paintings. She taught art in Monroe County schools for 30 years before retiring.

Exhibit by local artist open at gallery

“Art from a Creative Mind” featuring work by local artist Sally Greeno is open through Monday, Sept. 26 at B3 Gallery. The gallery is upstairs at 61 W. Main St.

Greeno enjoys experimenting with a variety of styles, working in acrylics and watercolor. Her show includes traditional pieces, abstracts, Brown County primitives and impressionist paintings. Greeno moved to Brown County and began painting after retirement.

Pet caricatures by Hoosier artist at gallery

Work by Hoosier artist Perry Couch is featured at Ascension Fine Arts, upstairs at 61 W. Main St. His show, “Sandy Whiskers: A Whimsical Menagerie,” will run through Sept. 26.

Working on wood with acrylic and colored pencil, Couch creates animal caricatures. He will create custom pieces from pet photos, making cat pirates, princesses or other persona. He received a degree in painting and drawing from Indiana University.

Music-themed artwork on display at Playhouse

The Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission is coordinating an art show at the Brown County Playhouse. It began during the Indiana Fingerstyle Guitar Competition and will remain on display at The Playhouse through Sunday, Sept. 30. All work is for sale.

Handmade market in October accepting vendors

The Brown County Handmade Market, Parkview Church of the Nazarene’s craft show extravaganza, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

The market will feature a variety of artisans selling one-of-a-kind handmade and upcycled creations, including accessories, home decor, apparel, holiday items, gifts and more. It will include vendors and food, seating areas, a photo booth and a children’s activity area.

Vendor applications for handcrafted items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by application date. Booth rent proceeds will benefit the ministries of Parkview Church of the Nazarene. For applications and event details, visit BCHandmadeMarket.com.

B3 Gallery, in downtown Nashville at 61 W. Main St., is expanding. The owners are seeking artists to display 2-D and 3-D work.

Artists would have a co-op type arrangement but with no work requirements.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”

Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.
