SCHOOL NEWS: Board approves staff changes, policies

The Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the following at the Aug. 2, Aug. 16 and Sept. 6 meetings:

  • The final reading of the NEOLA board policy updates, including policies on the employment of substitutes; anti-harassment policies for professional staff, administration, support staff and students; use of school facilities; and extra-curricular funds.
  • The final reading of the metal detector use policy.
  • The Teacher Appreciation Grant policy for 2018-2019.
  • The formal adoption of the ALICE active shooter response protocol.
  • Advertising the 2019 budget and submitting it to the online Gateway platform.
  • A memorandum of understanding between Brown County Schools and the Brown County Bantam Football League to set the terms and understanding between the two entities about the installation and ongoing maintenance of a Bantam storage building to be put on school property. All costs will be covered by the BC Bantam Football League.
  • Hours for Kathryn Kabe at the Brown County Career Resource Center: 16 hours as adult education coordinator and 16 hours as career education coordinator. The school board had previously approved her to work 30 hours instead of 32.
  • An overnight field trip for the cross-country team to attend an informational meeting at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, Sept. 21-22.
  • A route extension for bus 32, Kenny Roberts, two miles and $13.46 per day, effective Aug. 8. A correction was later approved, making the round trip four miles and payment $26.92 per day.
  • Separating Brown County Junior High School Robotics Club sponsor Dan Lewellen, effective Aug. 10. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Sprunica Elementary School after-school coordinator Kirsten McDaniel, effective Aug. 24. This was not a termination. Madisyn Fry was appointed to replace her, part time with no benefits, $13.75 per hour, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 21.
  • Separating Brown County High School academic Super Bowl English sponsor Hillary Frye, effective Aug. 15. This was not a termination. Rebekah Bryan was appointed to replace her, $684 stipend, effective Aug. 15.
  • Separating BCS cafeteria worker Amber Wimmenauer, effective Aug. 15. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Brown County Intermediate School choir director Kristi Billings, effective Aug. 16. This was not a termination. Daniel Lyng was appointed to replace her, $559 stipend, effective Aug. 15. Billings will remain as choir director at BCHS.
  • Appointing Helmsburg Elementary School after-school care assistant Erin Harden, part-time, no benefits, $9.25 per hour, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 9.
  • Appointing Van Buren Elementary School after-school care assistant Jerrica Shrader, part time, no benefits, $9.25 per hour, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 9.
  • Appointing BCS bus driver Leslie Dras, full time with benefits, 180 days per year, six hours per day, $91 per day, effective Aug. 8.
  • Transferring BCJHS night custodian Carla Brown to BCJHS head custodian, $14.50 per hour, 260 days per year, eight hours per day, effective Aug. 6. She is a replacement for Wendy Burgmeier.
  • A request for Matthew Stark, Dean Keefauver and Christopher Townsend to attend the International Manufacturers Trade Show in Chicago Sept. 9-12. All costs associated with this trip are being paid for by the Ready Schools grant.
  • A field trip request for the Brown County High School History Club to travel to Boston, Massachusetts March 18-21. This trip takes place during spring break.
  • Separating BCHS custodian John Brand, effective Aug. 9. This was not a termination.
  • Separating Brown County Junior High School social studies academic team coach Michael Potts, effective Aug. 27. This was not a termination. Justin Schwenk was appointed to replace him, $622 stipend.
  • Separating Brown County Intermediate School fifth-grade boys basketball coach Justin Dodd, effective Aug. 7, This was not a termination.
  • Separating Van Buren Elementary School science fair sponsor and instructional team leader Bonnie Griffee, effective Aug. 17. This was not a termination. Kera Hayworth was appointed to replace her as instructional team leader, $2,226 stipend, effective Sept. 4.
  • Appointing BCHS second-shift custodian Stevie Boyd, full-time with benefits, $11.25 per hour, 260 days per year, effective Aug. 20, as a replacement for John Brand.
  • Appointing Brown County Schools special needs bus driver Darin Platter, full time with benefits, $86 per day, 180 days per year, effective Sept. 4. He is a replacement for Tracy Fletcher.
  • Appointing BCIS fifth-grade Math Bowl sponsor Mitzi Garman, split with Pam Lucas, $279.50 stipend each, effective Aug. 28.
  • Appointing BCHS girls assistant varsity basketball coach Daisha Holt, group 3, $3,324 stipend, effective Sept. 6. She is a replacement for Sasha Robinson.
  • Appointing BCHS assistant boys soccer coach Andrew Barrett, $1,535 stipend, effective Sept. 6. He is a replacement for Erich Nolan.
  • Appointing BCHS assistant cheer coach Stacey Price, $1,278 stipend, effective Sept. 6. She is a replacement for Lacey Robinson.
  • Appointing SES food service worker Lindsey Lewis, part time with no benefits, $10.25 per hour, 180 days per year, effective Aug. 24. She is a replacement for Pam Pennington.
  • Transferring SES food service worker Amanda Lasley to BCJHS food service, effective Aug. 8. She is a replacement for Joanna Spalding.
  • Transferring BCIS teacher Kera Hayworth to VBE teacher, effective Sept. 4. This transfer was done as a cost-saving measure to fill the position after Griffee left the school district. Hayworth’s BCIS special education position will not be filled. BCIS will still have four special education teachers to teach 22 students, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.
