Meet, Greet and Eat planned in Helmsburg

HELMSBURG — All are welcome at the Helmsburg Meet, Greet and Eat Friday night, Oct. 19. The event will be outside near the Brown County Community Church if the weather is nice, or inside the church if it isn’t.

Chili and hot dogs will be served starting at 6 p.m. The movie “Wonder” will start at 7 p.m.

This event is co-hosted by the church and Helmsburg Community Development.

Lions breakfast Oct. 20 to aid club projects

The Brown County Lions Club will serve a pancake or biscuits and gravy breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Parkview Church of the Nazarene Annex, 1750 Old State Road 46.

Tickets are $6 in advance for adults and children 12 and older, or a $7 donation at the door. For children 11 and younger, the cost is $4.

Monthly weave-in, spin-in planned at library

Teen and adult weavers and spinners, whether expert or beginner, can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library. The free program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 20, is an opportunity to share weaving and spinning projects, ideas and to ask questions. No prior registration is needed. Visit with firefighters, eat chili in Van Buren Twp.

STONE HEAD — Southern Brown Volunteer Fire Department will have a Chili Fest from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the fire station, 4040 State Road 135 South. Different types of chili, cornbread and peanut butter sandwiches will be served. Donations are welcome.

Community band concert at church this Saturday

The Brown County Community Band anniversary concert, “Let’s Dance!” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at Nashville United Methodist Church. The event will include concert, jazz and dance band arrangements performed under the direction of Shawn Bentz. While the concert is free, donations are welcome. The church is at 36 S. Jefferson St., just south of Main Street downtown.

Free activities for children, teens at library this fall

Brown County Public Library is offering the following free activities:

Wednesdays

  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. — Oct. 24 and Nov. 28, teen craft program and snacks.
  • 5 to 6 p.m. — Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, Cover-to-Cover Kids Book Club. Children can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Thursdays

  • 3 to 5 p.m. — Weekly, homework and tutoring for teens on the lower level of the library. Volunteers from the literacy coalition and library staff will be available.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Oct. 25, Nov. 29. Teens can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Learn about Lake Monroe watershed concerns

BLOOMINGTON — Friends of Lake Monroe will conduct a public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Monroe County Public Library auditorium.

FLM has learned that Hoosier National Forest is proposing to log more than 4,000 acres in the Lake Monroe watershed in Jackson County. Mike Chaveas, HNF forest supervisor, will present information about this project and answer questions.

FLM will live-stream this meeting on Facebook for all those who can’t be physically present.

This meeting will replace the group’s November meeting to accommodate the Thanksgiving holiday.

Neighborhood Church of God revival planned

CORDRY-SWEETWATER — The Neighborhood Church of God, 7440 Sweetwater Trail, will host its revival and homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 28 beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Jessica Hall will preach for both events. Music will be by the Woodsmen Quartet. A dinner will follow.

Town adds bagged leaf pickup dates

The Town of Nashville will pick up bagged leaves only on Tuesdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 13.

Nashville residents can bag and leave them by the curb. Bags with trash, sticks or other objects included will not be accepted.

Get free technology help at library

Volunteer Ryan Ridge will offer a free tutorial at the Brown County Public Library for those who struggle with computers, smartphones or tablets. From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, Ridge will be available in a lower-level meeting room of the library, 205 Locust Lane.

Christmas bazaar planned for November

St. Agnes Catholic Church will host its 2018 Christmas Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3.

Items for sale will include Christmas decorations, crafts, books, jewelry and accessories, aprons, kid’s items, collectibles and paper craft products. There will also be a silent auction of gift baskets and tabletop Christmas trees.

Cookies will be available for purchase by the pound along with other baked treats. Coffee and hot tea will be available from Sweetea’s Tea Shop.

A Brown County Stars queen-sized quilt will be raffled, with the drawing at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Veterans Day program open to community

Brown County Schools will host its annual community Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the high school’s Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium. Keith Baker will be the guest speaker.

Veterans are welcome at a social hour at 8:30 a.m. and at a luncheon after the program. Doors open to the public at 9 a.m.

All veterans are welcome to attend and be recognized, in addition to the widows of fallen veterans. A special commemoration will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Banks’ ultimate sacrifice will be remembered. A military salute will be performed by the Brown County High School band and high school and junior high choirs. History Club members will make presentations and winners will be announced of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests.

Hohenberger photos going in special exhibit

On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, the Brown County Historical Society will present a unique exhibit of Frank Hohenberger photos from its archive and his hand-colored photos from private collections. His cameras and other personal items also will be displayed.

On Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., guests can enjoy the exhibit, a chili supper, wine tasting and a silent auction. Donation is $10. On Saturday, Nov. 10, the exhibit and chili lunch continue. The Abe Martin Bazaar featuring local artisans will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All events will be at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Although the hand-colored photos are shared only Nov. 9 and 10, much of this special Frank Hohenberger exhibit will continue through March.

Community Christmas tree lighting date set

The Brown County Community Tree Lighting will take place Friday, Nov. 23 at the Brown County History Center. Refreshments and live holiday tunes played by Brown County Christmas Music Sing-Along artists will start at 5:30 and the tree lighting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Sessions are limited to 30 to 60 minutes and are best used for instruction on how to use the library catalog, databases, digital resources and the Internet. Call 812-988-2850 for an appointment.

Christmas drive-through light show set

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground will host Christmas at the Bean, an interactive, drive-through light show and live nativity scene. The event will run from dusk to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 28 to 30, and Friday, Dec. 14 to Thursday, Jan. 3.

Photo opportunities with Santa will be available.

Tickets available for self-guided cabin tour

Four log homes and a Presbyterian log church will be open to ticket holders for self-guided tours between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

The tour will include a 1937 home built using logs from the 1800s, a new partial-log home, a completely renovated log home, a log home once owned by Brown County artist Marie Goth, and a 19th century log church. Homeowners will be at each location to provide history on the homes and the church.

Tickets will be available at the History Center and the Brown County Visitors Center for $10 each prior to the event. Tickets at the History Center, visitors center and log church the day of the event will cost $12. Proceeds will go to the Brown County Historical Society for programming.

Local game convention planned in spring

BroCoCon, Brown County’s first game convention, is slated from Friday to Sunday, March 29 to 31 at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The event, hosted by The Toy Chest is intended to be family- and adult-friendly; adults are welcome with or without children.

The convention will include booths set up by category and vendor to learn, play and/or buy games, with popular strategy, family, party and toddler games available.

Game instruction will be provided, with time to learn and play new games, get instruction on strategy games, participate in a scavenger hunt around town and enjoy a 21-and-older after-party, as well as other activities.

BroCoCon tickets cost $10 per adult and $5 per child, with 2 and younger admitted free. The adult after-party, $10, includes a drink ticket. Fees of about $1.50 per ticket will be added.
