Letter: Thanks to everyone involved in pioneer Fall Gathering

To the editor:

The Fall Gathering was held in the Pioneer Village, Saturday, Sept. 29. A glorious fall day greeted the many visitors to our grounds.

Joyce Shook, dressed in her pioneer garb, walked around Nashville inviting visitors to stop by the village. Bob Shook, Jim Kelp and Richard Frenzel kept the fire going under a giant pot of ham and beans and shared it with anyone who cared to join them. John Main was in charge of rope making, Brenda Main, candle dipping, Jim Jessee and John McDaniel ran the blacksmith shop, and Bill Walters demonstrated many of the fine tools in the woodworkers shop.

A group of local spinners and weavers held a traditional Scottish Waulkin, a social event in which woven cloth is fulled or felted into a denser fabric, often to the singing of folk songs. This year, we were honored to have bag piper Ian Arthur from Bloomington on hand to provide some traditional music for this event.

The schoolhouse was the location for many other children’s activities. Marcia Sledd, Rita Simon and Heidi Bach all helped the children make some lovely crafts. Bill Lutes was on hand to share information about the one-room schoolhouses here in Brown County.

Many, many other volunteers helped to make this day possible. Please thank one and all for their support of such a fun filled event: Bob and Joyce Shook, John and Brenda Main, Bill Walters, Bill and Cheryl Boyle, Ginnvor and Pete Bullard, Rita Simon, Jay Hedrick, Janice Amidon, Lu Brunnemer, Jim Jessee, John McDaniel, Heidi Bach, Barbara Livesey,Richard Frenzel, Jennifer Hodge, Jim Kelp, Bill Lutes, Donna Jo Copeland, Marcia Sledd, Sandy Ackerman, Angie Easterday, Ian Arthur, Mary George Kipp and Kathy Sparks. Apologies to anyone whose name was omitted. Thank you, one and all!

Kathy Sparks, second vice president, Brown County Historical Society
