State park closed for deer reduction hunts

Brown County State Park will be closed to all visitors Tuesday, Nov. 13, and Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 26 and 27, for deer reduction hunts. Only hunters who have been drawn in advance for this hunt are allowed to participate.

Town bagged leaf pickup planned Nov. 13

The Town of Nashville will pick up bagged leaves on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Nashville residents can bag and leave them by the curb. Bags with trash, sticks or other objects included will not be accepted.

Free activities for children, teens at library this fall

The Brown County Public Library is offering the following free activities:

Tuesdays

  • 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Weekly through Dec. 4, Music & Movement Story Time for 6 and younger, music, dancing, stories.

Thursdays

  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Weekly through Dec. 6, Creative Builders for 12 and younger, with Lego, Duplos, Keva Blocks, Magna Tiles, more.
  • 2 to 2:45 p.m. — Weekly through Dec. 6, Ready Readers for ages 6 to 12, with practice reading, exploring, sharing.
  • 3 to 5 p.m. — Homework and tutoring for teens on the lower level of the library. Volunteers from the literacy coalition and library staff will be available.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Nov. 29, teens can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Mondays

  • 11 to 11:30 a.m. — Weekly through Dec. 3, Toddler Time for ages 1 to 3, singing, playing, reading.

Wednesdays

  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. — Nov. 28, teen craft program and snacks.
  • 5 to 6 p.m. — Dec. 5, Cover-to-Cover Kids Book Club. Children can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Blood donations can be made Nov. 14 at church

A blood donation opportunity is planned from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East.

Blood and platelets can only be given by donors who are feeling well.

Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are needed this fall after hurricanes Michael and Florence forced cancellation of about 200 blood drives.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of I.D. are required at check-in. High school students and other donors 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross blood donor app, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Volunteer transportation specialists who deliver blood products to area hospitals also are needed. For more information, visit rdcrss.org/driver.

Monthly weave-in, spin-in planned at library

Teen and adult weavers and spinners, whether expert or beginner, can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library. The free program, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15, is an opportunity to share weaving and spinning projects, ideas and to ask questions.

Lunch to honor veterans, military this Saturday

Veterans, military, extended family, police and emergency responders are encouraged to attend a bean soup lunch, now known as the annual “Buck Stogsdill Bean Feed.” The lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Veterans Hall, 902 Deer Run Lane.

The free event, in honor of Veterans Day, is sponsored by the Brown County Vietnam Veterans.

Adult discussion group will meet at library

Emergency preparedness will be the topic when an adult discussion group meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 in lower-level meeting Room B at the Brown County Public Library.

Members will talk about what to do if the “grid” goes down for days or weeks. The talk is free and open to the public.

The group usually meets the fourth Wednesday of every month to discuss pre-selected topics of interest designed to foster stimulating conversation, companionship and laughter.

Learn about internet safety at library

From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, volunteer Ryan Ridge will present information and answer questions about how to spot online dangers and protect yourself on the internet.

The two-hour class is free and open to the public.

Search for Earhart topic of Bald Eagles dinner

Gary Francis Quigg will discuss the search for aviator Amelia Earhart when the Brown County Eagles conduct a dinner meeting Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Brown County Inn.

The meeting to honor the 77th anniversary of Pearl Harbor will begin at 11 a.m. with “meet and greet” time at the inn, on the southwest corner where state roads 135 North and 46 East intersect.

A traditional harvest buffet will begin at noon. Reservations for the dinner meeting are needed by Thursday, Dec. 6. For $22, the buffet will include fried chicken, biscuits with apple butter, green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, tossed green salad with toppings, iced tea, lemonade, coffee and decaf coffee.

Quigg will talk about his involvement with The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) in search of an answer to the disappearance of Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, during her around-the-world record flight attempt.

Quigg has extensive archaeological field experience and has won awards for PBS documentaries. He participated in six expeditions to Nikomaroro Island in the South Pacific to conduct research on the disappearance of Earhart; his latest trip was in June 2015.

The Bald Eagles have met twice a year for more than 25 years and are made up of military veterans and others who have an interest in aviation and aviation history. Dress is casual and friends are welcome at the dinner.

Senior art, craft fair planned Dec. 8

Willow Manor and Hawthorne Hills senior apartments will host an art and craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Willow Manor, 72 Willow St.

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Sessions are limited to 30 to 60 minutes and are best used for instruction on how to use the library catalog, databases, digital resources and the Internet. Call 812-988-2850 for an appointment.

Local game convention planned in spring

BroCoCon, Brown County’s first game convention, is planned from Friday to Sunday, March 29 to 31 at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The event, hosted by The Toy Chest is intended to be family- and adult-friendly; adults are welcome with or without children.

The convention will include booths set up by category and vendor to learn, play and/or buy games, with popular strategy, family, party and toddler games available.

Game instruction will be provided, with time to learn and play new games, get instruction on strategy games, participate in a scavenger hunt around town and enjoy a 21-and-older after-party, as well as other activities.

BroCoCon tickets cost $10 per adult and $5 per child, with 2 and younger admitted free. The adult after-party, $10, includes a drink ticket. Fees of about $1.50 per ticket will be added.
