COUNTY NEWS: Commissioners seek applicants for appointed boards

The Brown County Commissioners are looking for applicants to fill open spots on a variety of county boards.

For 2019, the commissioners have one opening each on the Alcoholic Beverage Commission (one-year term), the Brown County Board of Health (four-year term, must be a health professional), the library board (four-year term), the Helmsburg Regional Sewer District Board (four-year term), Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals (one-year term), the Brown County Redevelopment Commission (one-year term), and the Board of Zoning Appeals (four year term).

The commissioners also looking to fill two spots on the Brown County Convention and Visitors Commission. One appointment must represent the lodging industry and the other must represent the business community.

Anyone interested in applying should submit letters of interest and resumes to the commissioners office at the County Office Building, 201 N. Locust Lane, in Nashville by 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Letters and resumes should include complete contact information and experience. They can also be sent by email to [email protected] or to P.O. Box 151, Nashville, IN 47448.

At the Dec. 19 commissioners meeting, resident Sherrie Mitchell asked about the status of creating a policy and procedure for board appointments to avoid any future complaints about how people are appointed. Several months ago, the commissioners said they would work with county attorney Jake German on creating policies and procedures.

Commissioner Diana Biddle said she found a policy in a handbook that former county administrator Michael Thompson had put together, but she had not spoken recently with German about creating anything additional.

She said the current policy is that the commissioners accept letters of interest and then they look them over before appointing people after the first of the year.

Mitchell said she would like to see a list of criteria put together for people to serve on these boards to make it easier for citizens to volunteer and get involved. Commissioner Jerry Pittman said he would work on creating that criteria document.
