Police: Truck stolen with keys, dog inside

HELMSBURG — A North Vernon man faces a felony in Brown County after police say he stole a truck parked outside the Helmsburg General Store on Nov. 23.

Micah Bowling, 44, was charged Nov. 30 with vehicle theft, a Level 6 felony, for stealing a truck while it was parked on Main Street in Helmsburg. The keys were left in the truck, according to a probable cause affidavit by Sgt. Scott Bowling with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect was caught on videotape taking the truck after he had come into the store to ask if he could wait on his wife outside. The tape showed him throwing a dog out of the truck before taking off, the affidavit states.

Micah Bowling drove the truck north on Lick Creek Road before turning onto Cottonwood Road where a gas tank and battery fell off. One person put that information on Facebook and someone reached out to say that Micah Bowling had come to him in Martinsville wanting to sell the truck, according to the affidavit.

The person who shared the information on Facebook said that person said the man trying to sell the truck was named “Micah.”

Sgt. Bowling was able to get a recent photo of Micah Bowling and showed it to witnesses who confirmed it was him. They also looked at the video to identify Bowling.
