Broken taillight stop results in arrest for meth possession

HAMBLEN TWP. — A Franklin woman was arrested in Brown County on Dec. 9 after police stopped her vehicle for having a broken taillight, then found methamphetamine.

Indiana State Police Trooper Matthew Hatchett was driving on Peoga Road near Green Road when he stopped Danielle Goodwin, 33. She appeared to be nervous, avoided making eye contact, and her speech was shaking and cracking, he wrote. She told him she was driving to a friend’s house on Woodland Lake Road from her home in Franklin, the report said.

Goodwin allegedly then told Hatchett that she was living out of her car. She continued to make conflicting statements about her life and plans for the evening, the affidavit states.

While checking her information and writing the warning for the broken taillight, Hatchett was advised by dispatch that Goodwin had attempted to hide a gun before and did not have a permit. Hatchett then requested another trooper to the scene.

Goodwin was asked to exit the vehicle and agreed to a pat-down check for weapons. Before conducting the weapon check, Hatchett reported seeing a plastic baggy corner hanging out of her jacket pocket that appeared to contain white powder residue. The residue later field-tested positive for methamphetamine, the affidavit states.

Inside her jacket, Hatchett found another baggy with residue, and another baggy in a different pocket with a crystalline substance which Hatchett believed to be meth.

Goodwin was placed under arrest. She admitted that the substance was meth and that she had forgotten about it. She said if she would have known she had the drugs, she would have stayed in Franklin to use, the affidavit states.

Brown County jail staff reported finding six grams of methamphetamine and a glass pipe while searching her.

On Dec. 10, Goodwin was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony, for possessing at least five grams of meth.
